Well yeah when you have those perks of course it's a better deal. Now how much would that have been without your companion pass and free upgrades?

Yep, SJ is the 3rd biggest city in California. They even added a 2nd terminal in 2010 and more than doubled its capacity. It's 3-4 miles from downtown and pretty busy with tech business travelers along with the standard civilian travelers.

BTW, a basic compact from Hertz during this period averages around $100/day or more. An SUV is $300/day.

They get supplemented to provide these crazy cheap flights, and everything else will be inflated. Just look at hotel prices during this period as well.

Rebooked my hawaii tickets for $40 cheaper on each leg. Saw the email but I thought I'd post here as the sale actually had lower prices for me for once.

$99 OW is still not worth being stuck on a Southwest plane for 5 - 6 hours.

Instead, I just booked 2 SAN-OGG roundtrips on Alaska in early December for $615.03 all in - confirmed premium economy outbound (free drinks), first class return, good chance at a first class upgrade for the outbound. Full disclosure: required the use of AS credit card companion pass, 2 Gold Guest Upgrades. Also includes 4 free checked bags.

$200 is a SMALL price to pay to start (and end) a Hawaii leisure trip more relaxed, on a positive note.

Minor details... Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

For those of us without access to 1st class upgrades on Alaska or one of the 3 majors, Southwest is equal to or better than coach on the 737/A320's that comprise most California-Hawaii flights these days.

Anyone can get the $100 companion fare with an Alaska credit card from B of A, pay the same price. Gold Guest Upgrades are given to those who earn status - as little as 20k miles per year (4 flights to Hawaii, transcons).

Perks come from being loyal to one carrier - Alaska in this case. Many here suggest that there is no longer a reason to be loyal to one carrier, best to simply play the field, book the lowest fare for a given trip - this example suggests otherwise.
