Stumbled on this via an Instagram ad. This is the lowest price I've ever seen on the Edifier S1000db, which are one of CR's highest rated BT speakers, ever... of any brand. Currently, CR ranks them #2, only to be beat out by the Edifier S1000MKII's, which score only one point higher than the S1000db's. I also own these speakers (bought them after reading the glowing CR review). Retail is $400 (new), and Amazon regularly sells them for $350. So, this refurbished version is $126 less than you can purchase them new.

Here is what CR said about these speakers in their review (and why I bought them):
  • "...among the very best speakers we've ever tested."
  • "...Edifier's detailed midrange, which places musicians precisely in space almost like a sonic hologram generator."

About this item
  • BLUETOOTH 4.0 aptX connectivity ā€“ Stream high quality sound wirelessly with minimal loss
  • OPTICAL / COAXIAL and AUX inputs - Attach the professional studio speakers to multiple sources at the same time
  • 5.5 INCH MID-RANGE UNIT - Coupled with Digital Sound Processing (DSP) technology to deliver 120 watts RMS quality sound
  • REMOTE CONTROL - Switch input sources and control the volume at your figure tips.
  • 1 year warranty

The NY Times Wirecutter [nytimes.com] also found the newer version of these speakers (the aforementioned S1000MKII) as their "Best Powered Bookshelf Speakers."

Quote :
The Edifier S1000MKII is the best affordable powered speaker system we've heardā€”as was its predecessor, the S1000DB, the former top pick in our now-retired guide to the best wireless powered bookshelf speakers. Among all the powered speakers we tested, the S1000MKII pair produced the most enveloping sound; its vocal reproduction was realistic, too, and its bass was impressively full. It also looks nicer than most powered speakers do, although its styling is decidedly old-school. It includes bass and treble controls for you to fine-tune the sound to your liking, as well as a remote, a variety of input options, and built-in Bluetooth.

I have these and the are ok. If you watch zreviews there is a different slightly more expensive that he really like. It has a different tweeter. I really want to try the new ones. But I have to many speakers. For whoever asked about them as desktop speakers, they are quite large. I can't remember if these are near field.

Oh yeah, one other thing I don't like is no sub out

Personally I switched to getting one for the little integrated amps and buying passive speakers.

Your really.could.use the edifier 1280dbs as a desk top pair. I use them on my work computer desk

You have to go to the final checkout page to see the additional discount. You will not see it when you simply add it to your cart.

I just hooked up the 1280DBs to my desktop and I'm pretty impressed so far. Although they have a "popping" sound any time audio stops/starts, which is pretty annoying. The 1280DB I returned did not have this issue so I'm not sure if it's a defect or just a bad optical cable or something.

How are these compared to the 1280's?

That popping you mention, I actually have that problem on my s1000db, it doesn't happen every time though. it's weird, its almost like it builds up a charge then does it for awhile then stops.

as for how it the 1280 compare to the s1000. I've relegated my s1000 to the bedroom mostly b/c i have to many other speakers. I find the s1000 to be a little to bassy, in the sense that some audio comes out a little muddy. but with most content its good. s1000 can be used to fill a room, where as the 1280 imo are better suited to the desk.

right now i have a fosi audio bt30d and a pair of the sony bookshelves (the ones that were or are on sale recently) as my desktop speakers. I rotate them with a pair of klipsch and micca. all three are good. i have a minirig sub that i use sometimes too.
