I run mine on a UPS. Keeps the modem, router and OBI up in a power outage.
Been using mine for the home office, been rock solid since day 1.

1) Buy this box
2) Sign up for Google Voice [google.com]
3) Register your new box and connect Google Voice [youtube.com]
4) Optional: Sign up for 911 service [gv911.com] if you need it

I am using this phone [amazon.com] as a wired desk phone with a good speakerphone.
Ahh …. with a 6" touch screen with cameras on both sides with a finger print reader and a store just for little programs …..

I think you got something there đŸ¤£

Trust me, I'm not the one requesting/suggesting faxes.

If I do the initial setup at home with a google voice account can I ship it to my Mother in a different state and just have her plug and play? Or will it not like a different IP address?
Yep, it'll work fine. All this talk about GV, and yet there's plenty of other VoIP providers out there. I'm currently paying $3/month with https://www.voip.ms for a local # with e911, don't make outgoing calls (billed at something like $0.01/min), and nearly all my inbound go straight to voicemail. Once you configure the Obi200 with the VoIP provider's server address & login credentials, and provided your destination's router can provide DNS, then it only needs an Ethernet cable, an analog phone cable, and a power plug.

P.S. Faxing with my provider is handled by setting up a dedicated analog-friendly 2nd line, as opposed to your primary-but-audio-compressed 1st line, and sending/receiving goes through that other phone # Here's the wiki about it ... https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Virtual_Fax

Do I have to plug a phone into this, or can I just plug the wire into this from the wall and use a wired phone in a different room?
Yes, you can plug a wire from the output of this Polycom device into any existing phone jack in your home. Then all the other phone lacks in your home will work. You can plug a regular phone into any or all of them. If you wish you can also plug a cordless phone base station into one of the wall plugs and all your cordless phones will work as well. I've had my house setup this way for the last 6 years.

If it's analog, i don't think so...but there is a device, iirc, called an ATA. it converts voip to an analog line.
This device literally does what you are describing already. You plug your analog phone into the Obi200, setup the Obi200 with VOIP service, and it just works. Your phone doesn't know any different. So yes, grandma's fat finger phone will work just fine.

I dont know which model I have but faxing works great with my google voice linked to one of these boxes. Sometimes you have to do *99 but most of the time it works perfectly the first time. Been using it for 5-8 years at least after my Sunrocket and Ooma box died.

Anyone use this for faxing? I have an Obi100 sitting in a box I bought literally a decade ago but I never got around to setting up. I assume it's too outdated now to bother with.
I have the dual port version hooked up with GV, fax works for me. Both sending and receiving.

Hi all, I've seen this come up before but I can never get myself to buy it as it seems that I may have all the functionality I need just with the Google Voice app. I'm moving to Japan and we'll have Japanese cell phone coverage everywhere, which will include GV so we can answer whoever calls our US number. Other than not having to deal with the cell phone app and using the only at home phone aspect of the service, am I missing something? Thanks in advance!

actually, you get everything with the app + much more (ability to text, battery, mobility . . . .). the only thing missing is you can't fax (because you cell does not have a modem).

Terrible time to buy an expensive PW w/ cheaper & larger battery solutions coming soon especially mobilized bidirectional (e. g. Ford Lightning, likely cybertruck)
I like this option. Buy a Tesla or Ford Lighting and just plug the Obihai into it. Not only do you know have backup power but it's also mobile!

Sarcasm not lost. I thought you were actually considering a powerwall... I mean there are people like this. To clarify, not any Tesla will do, my M3 doesn't. laugh out loud

I am/was considering a PW but for other reasons. I had the crazy thought of investing in solar/battery to run a small mining operation in my garage. It didn't go any further than "thought" though. Plus all of our cars are 14+ years old and I'm guessing our next car will be electric.
How do you like the M3? I'm hoping the prices go down a little and maybe that'll be my wife's next car.

Happy camper so far minus cabin noise that they've repeatedly failed to fix; no longer an issue with dual pane windows; powerwall pricey per watt; literally cheaper to buy cybertruck and use as powerwall. You'll likely want a few powerwalls anyway. Have 11.3kWh solar now, just waiting...
