The points don't actually expire because they're old, they expire b/c Disney assumes you've abandoned the acct after over a year of complete inactivity. even 5-10 years ago you at least had to sign into your acct once every 210 days or your points could be cleared so the point removal isn't new.
Starting a year or two ago you now have to do something once a year - adding points or redeeming for something. I'm not sure if redeeming the 0 point rewards might count.
Activity includes adding the 70-80+ Free Point Codes Disney gives every year. As long as you do that your points are safe indefinitely, but just signing in alone isn't enough. I know people that haven't redeemed anything other than free points in 6 years and still have all their points from 2006-2015. Looking at my list -- I redeemed 700 free points in 2020 and over 500 so far this year.
Even if somehow folks manage to do absolutely nothing for 400-500 days and your points go away, about 95% of the people who ask nicely (rather than usual angry entitled Slickdeal style) have gotten their points reinstated -- at least the first time.

'Entitled' , yeah, how dare anyone upset of losing points that they earned.
There's no reason to 'clear out' an account. It take up no server space, it literally costs Disney nothing. If torrent sites can save my account for 10 years without my visiting (and I've done this), there's no reason why a multi billion dollar company can't either.
