Not true at all. That's the review I read too, but I bought it for the kitchen so i didn't really care, after measuring it in REW, the bass response (lower extension is Completely flat) no boom whatsoever. It doesn't have alot of sub 30hz, but there is absolutely no sharp spot where one could say it's boomy.

a very cheap sub. It is very boomy and not very accurate.
this also goes under the SD advertisement for its' daily Adorama posts that the SD editors constantly push.

I have 2x of these and compared to the newer R-120SW (and apparently also the 10" version of the one in OP -- the R-10SW), it is pretty boomy.
You might not notice or care, especially for the price, but if you're mixing with other subs or have experience, you'll probably notice it. For the price, still worth it. If you can find the R-10SW for similar price of the R-120SW when on sale ($199), both would be recommended over this.
I picked these up to go alongside my 120 after many posted that it's simply a cosmetic change (the 120 having more gold-painted parts to match the woofer), but it's definitely not on the same level as the 120 when it comes to quality (not that the 120 was a high standard to compare to)

This is the older version, replaced by the 120sw.
