So both are Amazon made devices and are tied into Amazon services. She can read on both, but the experience is vastly different and each device has a different focus.
This device - essentially a traditional tablet like an iPad or Samsung tablet. Runs on Fire OS, which is Android that Amazon took and customized it themselves. That means pretty similar to Android devices. Your mom can also read books just fine on this. Works like you imagine - tap to turn page, highlight it all, have books ready downloaded. It's just a normal LCD screen in HD resolution. (It's actually slightly more HD resolution at 1920x1200)
The regular Kindle's have an e-ink screen which isn't as sharp or high resolution as the Fire tablets. Amazon also chooses not to use color e-ink screens (although they do exist). These screens make it nice to read in sunlight or at home - all have lights built in now but they can be turned off. This screen also makes its battery last weeks, not a day or two.

After using Fire Toolbox, this thing is plenty capable. Picked up another one here for myself! Nice little bedside media consumption device. Crazy that Amazon can basically give these away.
