I have an AMEX account opened since 1991. Several years ago I added my wife as an AU. I checked on her credit reports on Creditkarma. Both Transunion and Equifax has her AMEX AU account reported as a new account when it was opened. Thus the new AU account shortened her average life of credit. I am not sure if Discover would report differently to credit bureaus. Unless they also report the credit history of the primary account, $25 is not worth to have the FICO drop due to a new account reported to credit bureaus.
I looked it up on the Discover Card site and saw that they do require a DoB and a SSN# for any AU.
So apparently our cats, doggies, and pet turtles, and imaginary friends are a no-go.

What information is needed in order to add an Authorized User to an account?
"It is our practice to verify the identity of all users of a Discover card account. To do so, we require the primary cardholder to provide the first and last name, address, date of birth and social security number for all Authorized Users added to their Discover card account."
