It's the _previous_ generation of the Paperwhite.
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle

Paperwhite 3 was a 7th gen Kindle that came out 6/30/2015.
Paperwhite 4 (current gen) is a 10th gen Kindle that came out 11/7/2018.

I have a Paperwhite 3 and like it a lot (upgraded from an old Nook Glowlight when the buttons started to fall apart on the side). Main difference between Paperwhite 3 and Paperwhite 4 is 4 is flat (no noticeable dip between the bezel and screen) and it's waterproof.

Big question would be how old the battery is. If these have been left fully discharged on the shelf for a few months/years, battery health is going to be dubious.

Warning for those planning to do this - set up a reminder to send in your trade in at the beginning of November if you want to do this for black friday. Some time around Prime Day this year they changed the trade in process - now you don't get the % off coupon until after the trade in completes: https://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Tra...0825010011

I'm just aiming for the first week since I don't know how long the discount will last once you get it.

When you're ready to upgrade, if you do the trade-in on Prime Day or Black Friday, you can get the new Paperwhite for about $25- $30 OOP.

I got my Papaerwhite 3 in 2018 and it's Amz trade-in value is $25 right now. So I'll most likely trade it in this upcoming BF, pay another $30 and be set for the next 3 years.

For what it's worth, 10th gen Paperwhite (used - acceptable) starts at $59.65: https://smile.amazon.com/All-new-...B07CXG6C9W

They nerfed the trade in value of all the older paperwhites (paperwhite 1,2 and even the 3). They're now only offering $5 trade in value for any of them for me (in working condition, no cracks, holds a charge).

That's why I want to trade mine in while it still has some value combined with the 20 or 25% off trade-in that's being offered at the time and then stacked with a Black Friday discount.

There is no such thing as a "10th generation Paperwhite". The current version is the 4th generation.

Doesnt seem like a good deal? From the pictures, this looks like the one with the recessed screen instead of the smooth front which means it iant waterproof?

It is technically a 10th generation Kindle device and the 4th version of a Paperwhite.

It's one of 10th generation of Kindles. https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cu...47NN4V6Y83

Besides waterproof design and flush front screen, 8g storage, the 4th gen paperwhite also has audiobook support

I had a Kindle Paperwhite 2 and upgraded to a 4 about a year ago. The flat screen is nice, really nice. It feels better, I don't have to worry about pet hair getting into the gap between the screen and bezel, and I opted for the larger storage so I could use it for manga too. It was a big upgrade for me.

But if the flush bezel and screen aren't appealing, and you've got no use for more than 4 or 8gb of storage for ebooks, a 3rd gen for under $50 is a killer deal. The higher PPI isn't a big deal to me over the 1st or 2nd, but the quality of the backlighting should still beat out the current gen base kindle and the refresh rate oughta be pretty comparable.
