I got this set without the sub and paired it with a SVS PB2000 and it sounds amazing. I think I paid $399 and was definitely worth it. Bought some in-ceiling atmos speakers and that took it to a whole different level. I dont think the klipsch reference series is any better but the reference premiere would be.
Good beginner set but terrible subwoofer. Get the set without the sub for $399 and get a nice 15" sub elsewhere.

Nearly all speakers are particle board, you're not going to get solid wood under 1k/speaker
Understood, these did seem very crumbly once damaged though.
I received my replacement pair of 809 on Friday after some confusing conversations with Adorama, the box was pretty beat up but the speakers did survive this time.
Based on the number of "used"/damaged pairs of 809 on adorama's website, I don't think this is a fluke and anyone who orders them should inspect these immediately to start the replacement process. They are not packaged well enough to be shipped in their original box, in my opinion. The rest of the pieces were packaged pretty well, but the 809 has pretty low Styrofoam padding that once crushed will fall apart, leaving the speakers to bounce around.
There are some pretty good prices on the damaged ones, starting at $74, but the shipping adds another $32 or so.
With a good sub you're outputting everything under 80hz, so yeah if you pick one area to splurge the sub should be near if not on top of your list. My first upgrade has been with my sub and it's made a world of difference.
Have this set. Everything is decent except the bookshelf speakers. Sent them back and replaced with some Infinity Reference.
Did you have the 803 bookshelf speakers, or the 801?
I think the 803 bookshelves sound just as good as the 809 towers, but I have read some bad reviews about the 801s.

I don't remember which ones. I send them back and they ran out of stock of bookshelf speakers, so I temporarily used some Polk T15s, which were an improvement, then upgraded those to some Infinity Reference.R152BK bookshelf speakers, which was an improvement on both. Also added the S 8s that go on top of the tower speakers. Now it's pretty good for what I paid for everything.

This price is $1146.01 lower (70% savings) than the $1646 list price.
LOL! I'm sure there were "lots" of people that paid $1,646...
