A 2 in 1 with a 1080p touch screen would be better. It's worth the few extra dollars.

Chromebooks are fast and reliable. They are also pretty easy to reset if something goes awry. I am not familiar with this particular Chromebook but have been using them almost exclusively for a decade.

I would also think a Chromebook would be easier to set up on a side table or his tray table without having to hold the device.

In terms of processor and RAM is this likely sufficient for basic schoolwork (likely all cloud work)? My kid's school isn't sure they will have enough chromebooks and I could justify getting my kid one for this price to help out and give him a dedicated to him device.

Yes. I think the only downsides to this are
1. Storage. 32GB only takes you so far. Sure, you can expand with as etc but it's a hassle.
2. If your kid is older, a bigger keyboard may be necessary.
3. Personal cribbing: No choice of browsers. I prefer to have more than one option.

I'd recommend waiting for a cheap Chromebook with a N4000 or N4020. The MT8183 has Octane scores around 10,000 which is definitely on the slow side even by Chromebook standards. The Lenovo 3 I'm typing on right now hits just over 18,000.

Based on spec, yes with usb c display port 1.1 to hdmi adapter. Can only output 720p 60Hz. You would want a usb c hub with power since there is only one usb c port for charging and display.

I just got a open box one for $88 from bestbuy, need to wait next week, so cannot test yet.
