Why? .... As a rule of thumb for water pressure requirements, you take the total dissolved solids (TDS) and divide by 100. So, a 1,000 TDS would require a water pressure of 10psi for the RO membrane to function correctly. The pre-filters are the key with a 5 micron or smaller final to help lower the TDS. You can add a pump to any RO system, but just something else to wear out if you don't need it, while the pre-filters are cheaper and add longevity to any RO system. As such, you can buy a cheaper RO system without those pre-filters and install a pre-filter system for the whole house that helps to keep pipes and fixtures cleaner. Personally, I would obtain a TDS meter [amazon.com] and take your pick for less than $10 delivered, to know the total TDS you are working with.

PS: The holding tank is the key for when you want 3 or 4 gallons now.
