I never use lens hoods. I like the effect of light creeping in.
I would say it depends on the intensity of the light and the angle you're taking your photo, yes sun/light flairs are a thing, however you usually don't want to take a photo with the light source directly in front of you anyways unless you're going for a specific outcome. But, that is why ND stop filters exist, which I have a couple as well.
Photography is pretty much about playing with light anyways.
