Membership is effectively free with their $20 bonus gift card to offset the $20 cost of the membership. It's definitely worth signing up IMO especially if you like outdoor activities. The 10% you save is a nice perk that really adds up
25% off Darn Tough socks, hopefully combined with their usual quantity discount of 10% off 3 pairs or more - I'll be loading up on those.
If you're not a "member" you're leaving money on the table shopping at REI.

I was in store a week or so ago and the associate told me this would be the 20%-off a full price item sale. Looks like he was wrong, which is too bad as my hiking shoes need replacement (and REI retail price is as good or better than anyone's on these shoes).

Any insight into the kingdom tent? Been hearing from friends something is wrong with the latest model regarding stitching and staying dry. Is it still a good buy?
I was between Kingdom and Base Camp 6. Did plenty of research and ended up getting the base camp tent last labor day sale. Its a great tent. I went with the base camp over the kingdom mostly due to it being better during windy conditions. Kingdom tent seemed like its geometry made it harder to camp comfortably in windy conditions. I sept up my base camp 6 for the first time in death valley at night during 30mph sustained winds. It was a little tough setting up, definitely needed 2 people for the conditions but the tent was sturdy once assembled. I think basecamp is the better tent.

I would buy from REI (and Sportsbasement) any day compared to Amazon. It's very hard to find quality products in Amazon and even if it is shipped and sold by Amazon you still stand a high chance of getting counterfeit products.

For me REI & Sportsbasement are like Disneyland. You can see quality products and the opportunity to see, feel and try it (and also some valuable info from store associates) along with excellent return policy all are worth for me compared to few bucks savings from unknown sellers. Again these are my thoughts and YMMV

So there is a lot of talk in this post about how REI is expensive or how they are overpriced for what you get etc. There are a few things that I think you get that are nice when you buy from them:
1. A store front that you can walk into with any issues with a product; the people there are generally knowledgeable about their specific departments
2. A return policy that is absolutely amazing. This summer I picked up a few kayaks and a roof rack all from REI. I had no idea if I would like the sport, the kayaks, or the roof rack. As it turned out, I did not like one of the two kayaks and that will be returned shortly. I also found that the roof rack (on a tacoma) was just way too difficult to actually use when I would go kayaking solo - this is also being returned. I have used both the rack and the kayaks all summer long and I would have had no real way of knowing that there were issues beforehand so this gave me tons of peace of mind in buying it from REI.
3. The membership pays for itself many times over, especially if you wait for specific sales. This one in particular has Darn Tough socks on sale which is definitely a 'buy it for life' purchase. You get enough of their socks (7+ pair), and will never have to worry about holes or worn cushioning in your socks again. This is a great deal on their socks, considering they go on sale directly from DT a few times a year and normally sit at 25% discount during said sales.
Overall, I think there is some value in purchasing specific things from REI and its outlet.

They changed it in recent years so it's one year from date of purchase. It used to be basically lifetime and regardless of usage.
Thanks for commenting on their return policy. I purchased some Hoka One One slides almost a year ago, and the side has collapsed. I had no idea I could return them.Applause

Like some of the others have said, this is 20% of REI outlet item only. They used to give you this discount on any regular priced item in the past but making this for outlet only products is a big minus. I was looking at getting a North Face sleeping bag but that product is not sold at the REI outlet section of the website. REI outlet is almost like a different store within REI.
When they used to give the discount off any "regular priced" item, was close to worthless unless you could find that 1 item that no one discounts. Now with Outlet only, I rarely bother looking within REI. I've heard the stories about returns and all, but it just isn't worth all the work finding something at even a decent price, with 20% off. Seems like the ONLY bragging point is returns. Not enough for me! I've had no problems returning to Dick's Sporting Goods. But then, I don't use stuff for a year and try to return it. I have no use for REI. None! Too expensive all the time.

Do you have any suggestions for tent novice. Looking for 6 person but easy set up as I have never done this. Will likely start at camping with kids in backyard and then likely at family friendly camp sites in future.

Thanks
