This one doesn't require you to have a water line, which is ideal if you want water in an area without a line.
Because a water hookup isn't always possible. In my instance: our office in a building my company rents isn't near the bathrooms and getting a plumber to run a line isn't worth the cost and headache of getting permission from the landlord, getting permits, etc.

Because some people are lucky enough for the military/government to contaminated the water with pfas aka firefighting foam used on planes. Which essentially is teflon in water supply.
Next time begin your post with "pfas", that way I can stop reading it sooner.

Stupid question:

Why would someone buy this type of water dispenser if a bottle-less one online is just a few bucks more?

With a bottle-less dispenser I don't have to carry a huge water bottle.

I'm asking because I'm considering a bottle-less dispenser.
It's about the quality of water. If some are specific about drinking "Natural Spring Water" bottomless option will not make sense as it filters the tap water. But how natural is the spring water is debatable!

Why not just buy water bottles from Costco, for $2.99 for a 40 pack of 16.9oz bottles (i.e. ~5.3 gallons of water)? Since it costs $2 to refill a 5 gallon water jug and water dispensers coat $100, I don't see the point of a water dispenser.

Even if you're reusing the same 5 gallon water bottles, you still have to drive back and forth to the store to refill it. If you aren't using the same 5 gallon bottle, you're still driving to the store to pick up however many of them or having them delivered by a delivery driver. How is that not bad for the environment.
I have a reverse osmosis system at home so I can do my refills without going anywhere. Saves money. Saves environment. And I'm not drinking plastic leached into the water because god knows how long those bottles were in the heat before they reached the store for you to buy.

We have one in our bedroom and we use it with tumblers. Water bottles take up space in the fridge. I have to walk all the way to the fridge to get them. Regardless of how the water is transported, the little plastic bottles are probably not actually recycled (even if you recycle them) where as the 5 gallon jugs are almost always cleaned and reused. Drinking out of the bottles is much less pleasing than a tumbler. I can fill as little or as much as I want without caring about opening a new bottle. The water is extremely cold out of a dispenser, which a fridge will not match unless you like your food occasionally freezing. I'm at Lowe's or the grocery store all the time so it's not like I'm doing any extra driving. They typically last 2 weeks and I have 3 or 4 I keep in my laundry room.

I'm sure there's more reasons, but there is my brain dump of reasons for you to consider.

That is a great idea! I was looking for a cheap water dispenser/cooler for my office, but hadn't looked for one that makes ice…and how amazing it would be if it made ice pellets! Time for me to start looking, ha!
There are a few companies that make such a thing, but the bottle goes in the top and they cost like $400.

Most people just do it when buying groceries. So it's not adding any additional carbon emissions from what you'd already be using since you'd be going to the store anyway.

Thanks OP. I was shopping for one last month and put it on hold as I didn't find any deals. I bought the same model as you. It's going in the master and I can't wait to not have to trek my tired ass downstairs anymore for some cold delicious h2o.

I need something like this on our 1st/2nd floor...can pickup bottle from walmart every week or two.
You can also get the jug refilled at the reverse osmosis water machine for $1.50 for 5 gallons. I live in a place effected by hurricanes and every year people are fighting over packs of bottled water and I am over driving of with 35 gallons for the price of one of those 24 packs. I keep one of these in kitchen and one in the garage.
