🤦The environment
This one doesn't require you to have a water line, which is ideal if you want water in an area without a line.
Because a water hookup isn't always possible. In my instance: our office in a building my company rents isn't near the bathrooms and getting a plumber to run a line isn't worth the cost and headache of getting permission from the landlord, getting permits, etc.

Since I went to fully WFH, I put one of these in my basement office (no water lines down here) that has a Keurig built in. Now hydrating all day is easy! I can fill up my water bottle with cold water, make a quick fresh cup of coffee, or use the hot water tap to make tea, oatmeal, or hot chocolate (refreshing in the dead of winter) while I am still dialed in to a conference call... it's awesome!I am almost continuously dialed in to a concall starting 7:30AM till about 6:00PM and only get a few couple min breaks through the day for biobreaks, grabbing lunch, etc., so not having to run upstairs to grab water or coffee anymore is a nice time saver.

Stupid question:

Why would someone buy this type of water dispenser if a bottle-less one online is just a few bucks more?

With a bottle-less dispenser I don't have to carry a huge water bottle.

I'm asking because I'm considering a bottle-less dispenser.

I thought the entire point of this is to have clean bottled water? If you use a water line there's no difference than using the faucet other than it may be colder

Which one did you order??
I ordered the stainless steel / nickel one that was like $136. I think that link ended up at the very bottom (originally $290). The stainless one with black trim on too is a little cheaper, and was like $269 originally (or something close to it). I just feel the stainless/nickel one looks nicer.

A while ago when I was looking for a water dispenser, I came across some on Amazon with an ice dispenser.

I have owned two of these. They look great, but both failed for different reasons within a year. The first one stopped chilling the water at about 9 months. The replacement they sent ( because the first one was still under warranty) failed after 6 months because it developed a leak at the screw cap. I don't know if I just got unlucky, or if the longevity of these is poor. Both unit had to be hauled to the dump!

If you really want a dependable unit, you might consider the Costco way. If you use their water delivery service, you can rent a dispenser for around $3 dollars a month. If the unit fails for some reason, they will drop off a new unit literally the next day and pick up the old unit. The cost of the water delivery is about $35 a month for 2-3 bottles delivered every other week. I find it very convenient and hassle free.

Ya there are plenty.

Here's a pretty cool one with high volume output for ice too.

Even if you're reusing the same 5 gallon water bottles, you still have to drive back and forth to the store to refill it. If you aren't using the same 5 gallon bottle, you're still driving to the store to pick up however many of them or having them delivered by a delivery driver. How is that not bad for the environment.
It's the 40 plastic bottles that you are comparing this to that are bad for the environment, not the amount of gas that you spend driving to get this jug refilled.

Also, wouldn't you have to drive to pick up your 40 pack also? Or someone is going to deliver it to you, so gas is used either way.

This is what we call, in scientific terms, a tradeoff.

Most people feel the emissions from their car taking a trip to a local store have far less environmental impact than leaving a couple dozen plastic bottles in a landfill.

In our area, the water PH is still high so we have to go buy water in 5 gallon bottles. Also for emergency as we get affected by hurricanes

We had a bottom loading unit and returned it. Made too much noise when the vacuum would kick in to pull the water up. It is also just something else to break (vacuum system).

We prefer the simplicity of gravity fed.

That said, these are great for people who cannot safely lift a full 5 gallon bottle.
