YMMV: HP Pavilion TP01-1023w with i5-10400, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. Ram can be upgraded for cheap.

MSRP is $549. Lots of stores have it for $249. Some have it for $100. My store had 4 in the clearance aisle despite 0 listed on Brickseek.

Good deal for people that can find it. Strangely brickseek is showing just 2 stores and wants me to go premium for more stores :-(

Only worth it at $100. You will have to upgrade the PSU to support any GPU (which you will also need). Not to mention an additional 8GB of Ram . The SSD is pretty small and most likely SATA not NVME as well. That and the CPU will leave much to be desired in the next year
That just sounds like a custom build with extra steps... lol

Yeah. Let's all go out and buy cpus that cost as much as this entire pc. We should all spend a $1000+ and have a better desktop than this.

Should mention that upgrading the PSU will require a hacksaw for the existing case... but 6 cores at this price is pretty darn good even given the market as of late, even for a box that for most is generally out of spec for any significant upgrades.

Good luck!

Where are these? Maybe more regionally available as I'm seeing none nearby in a number of major metro areas.

Good luck!

I'm in Memphis. I saw one in the Phoenix area. only one store had these. (I've been to all the stores in my area and only one location ever had them.)

Interestingly enough, there is an upgrade path [hp.com] supported for the CPU:

Intel Core i7-10700 (Comet Lake-S) 2.9 GHz base frequency, up to 4.8 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology, 16 MB L3 cache, 8 cores

Intel Core i7-10700F (Comet Lake-S) 2.9 GHz base frequency, up to 4.8 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology, 16 MB L3 cache, 8 cores

Good luck!
Jon

I have a similar build from Hp (HP Pavilion TP011026) but with 12 G ram. I was able to add a low power gpu rx 560 without additional power supply and play few games such as fortnite

Yeah.. or know the target market and recognize this would be amazing as is for tons of people. For instance, my 70+ year old mother who only owns an iPad and asks to use my PC from time to time. Unfortunately I don't think she will bite on it. For a kid to type up school papers, this is plenty of computer.

I have this machine. This is similar to the $380 FP deal at Staples last year December, except that one had 12 GB RAM and this one has 8 GB.
But then you would have thrown away the 4 GB anyway, and got another 8 GB stick.
  • This has a 256GB NVME SSD mostly Hynix (could be different as well).
  • It has 2 SATA ports for whatever SSD/HDD you want to put in. HP also includes screws and an extra SATA power and data cable.
  • It has 2 expansion PCI-E slots which are also unused.
  • It has two USB 3.1 Type A Gen 2 ports at 10Gbps and two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports at 5 Gbps. It also has a USB-C 3.1 10Gbps port with PD.
  • It can power a low power GPU easily for some minor gaming.
  • The RAM is Samsung 8 GB DDR4 2666. You can put any brand DDR4 2666 and it generally works. I had an older 8 GB DDR4-2400 lying around and now it works dual channel (albeit at slightly lower speed).
  • This is a pretty capable processor, i5 10th gen. After removing the bloatware, it absolutely flies, boots up almost instantaneously.
This PC would be great for most non-gaming users. All you would need is just an additional 8 GB RAM stick (if you need more RAM). You could easily also add internal large HDD for storage if needed later on. It's super easy to do.

I've been using this for home stuff, Plex, videos, transcoding, programming, coding, Microsoft Office etc etc - and this thing never missed a beat. Highly recommended.

You can type up a paper on literally any PC in the past 10 years as long as it has 4GB of RAM (assuming they need Windows 10). You also need to buy a monitor unless you intend to use your TV as one. It's not a terrible deal but I just really feel if you're spending that much, there are better alternatives. Laptops for example
