The problem I have with the pre-emergent is that you can't overseed in the spring or early-summer to try to thicken up the lawn and fill in the spots where the weeds used to be and where the crabgrass wants to go. Basically, you have one shot per year in Sept to aerate and overseed.

But this spring instead of using the "Halts" in late March, I used this [scotts.com] product with a new seeding. Five to six weeks later, I did one more application with more seeds and I was able to both fill in the lawn and squeeze most of the weeds and crabgrass out. We are coming out of the summer heat and there's a little crabgrass and tufts of clover trying to sneak back in, but once the temp drops a little more I'm going to apply a hose/spray weed control and follow it with plain lawn fertilizer.

I only bring this up as I spent years fighting back the weeds and crabgrass because the lawn wasn't full. The "standard" Scotts plan where you use pre-emergent first locks you into this cycle.
Fertilizer is rated by n-p-k ratio. So the 3 is the amount of potassium in the mix. Nitrogen phosphorus potassium.
You would apply this in fall iirc

I have creeping charlie also. I found that putting down preemergent in early Spring, and then weed and feed in May helps a bit. And I also try to pull them up by hand when the lawn is soaked from rain and the roots are easier to pull.

I respectfully disagree. The worst time of year to put down grass seed (cool season lawns in particular) is in the summer. 2nd worst time is in the spring. Both will require loads of watering throughout the summer to keep the grass growing and establishing a good root system.

If one is planning on over seeding the spring is the best time to start planning. Throw down some pre-emergent at the correct time. Find some pre-emergent WITHOUT fertilizer. If you can't, it's not a deal breaker to hit the lawn with some chemical nitrogen. The efficacy should last a good amount of time but be long gone by fall. You can spot spray any weeds that do sprout up with the correct herbicide. No problem if you want to throw down some organic fertilizer at this time as well.

FYI I wouldn't touch any Weed N' Feed even if it was free.

Does this work on dead lawns? We in the PNW haven't seen any measurable rain in nearly two months.

Fertilizing dead grass seems like a waste. Kind of like feeding a dead animal.

Use anything with a chemical named "Trimec" for Ground Ivy or Creeping Charlie

Depending on where you live. I am in the south, so pre-emergent gets put down bermudagrass in the fall as well to prevent winter weeds from popping up.

Thanks for your reply - I agree with what you say and it certainly makes sense for an established and reasonably healthy yard. About five years ago I had moved into a property with about 60% clover and crabgrass. I killed off the weeds, but that left very thin lawn with bare patches that were weed magnets and as I said with limited time to grow new grass, I had to do something to break the cycle.

I'm (obviously) not in the industry, but it would be a huge help to homeowners if different treatment schedules were published based upon the initial state of your lawn. The only guidance I have is what the local big box store stocks throughout the year: Halts (early spring), Weed and Feed (spring), Lawn Feed (early fall), Winterizer (late fall). I tried dealing with local professionals, but they missed deadlines and were no help in the end.

Wrong time of year to put down weed and feed but if you have a place to store the shelf life is long.
Agree on the shelf-life. In fact, granular fertilizer, apparently, NEVER expires:

I guess the only thing about storing it might be the odor. I've had 2 bags for a few weeks now in the garage, and the chemical smell is still really strong.

Our lawn is dying and has quite a lot of weeds. We have hired lawn services who will be aerating and seeding the lawn in 2 weeks and start the fertilizer and weed killer application cycles starting September too.

Since we have starved the lawn so long should we apply this before the seeding? We are novices here and any feedback for our specific situation is greatly appreciated. Ty!

Ps: we are in Raleigh, nc area

Ps2: just googled, and I think it says not to apply within 4 weeks of seeding. So, maybe we hold off on doing anything and let lawn service take care? But would love to figure this all out for myself over time.

Love the lawn but not an expert by any means. I did a dethacher run and it did wonders with seeding and weed prevention products like this
