For those who are new to these drones, please note that if you need an additional layer of safety with obstacle avoidance, the Air 2 is the least expensive model that offers front and rear and bottom obstacle avoidance. Mini / Mini 2 / SE don't have that; they just have an obstacle avoidance sensor on the bottom to prevent crash landing. That said, all drones need to be flown with care and that takes practice, even if there is obstacle avoidance feature available in your drone. But the point is that front and rear obstacle avoidance is really the only "substantial" safety feature missing from the Mini series. Otherwise, all Mini are fantastic value for money. The Mini 2 is definitely the best of the three and often found in like-new condition off the famous e-commerce website in USA for a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

If you buy the original mini and not the mini 2 you are making a massive mistake.

At this price point and for everything your getting with the drone, a 2.7k camera is plenty. This drone isn't meant for commercial or even prosumer levels of drone photography and videography, that's where you start getting into the Air 2 and higher end DJI drones. It's perfect for hobbyist and first time flyers!

Possibly! It really depends on what your looking for, since 2 extra batteries and the charging station alone for the SE will cost over $100 brand new. For a beginner set, who doesn't need the higher wind resistance, or the mavic mini 2 batteries, this is a killer deal

But Air2 is greater than 249g therefore require FAA Registration and registration if you flying internationally Frown. Mini is ok, mini 2 is better.

Oh totally - I wasn't posting a full review (pros and cons) because pros and cons are subjective. But feature-wise, active tracking and obstacle avoidance are really the only fully missing features from the Mini series. Obviously there are many other differences but they are just "better or worse" between Mini and Air.

What's the biggest downside from that aside from paying a fee?

Fee is minimal. Not an issue for me. Issue is if you fly internationally. For example, taking Drone to Canada or UK would require pre registration with Canada or UK Govt in order to take by Air and use Drone there legally. Else you may serve some jail time or fine

I just read the UK requirements, definitely would require a bit of work to operate internationally! However, Canada has somewhat similar rules to the U.S. about drones under 250g.

From Transport Canada's website;
"Drone pilots must carry a valid drone pilot certificate and only fly drones that are marked and registered. If you are flying a drone that is less than 250 grams, you do not need to register the drone or get a drone pilot certificate."
