Audible is a ripoff get a public library card and the Libby app and you can listen to a lot of the same audiobooks for free and a few extra free things like kindle books, magazines, and access to 3rd party sites like great courses plus
A ripoff to some yes. I have never paid over $10 for a credit. I have over 200 books. Many were purchased with 2 for 1 deals.
Regardless of cost I love the flexibility. I share my library with my family. I continue books from echo devices. I can take 2 months to finish a book/course, etc.
I can see where people don't find value in audible but obviously it's not the same story for everyone.
Be sure to use Add Sale Selection area at the bottom of the browser window & not the usual Add to Cart method of buying.
Otherwise, it was about to charge me 2 credits for the 2 books I chose in my Cart. I had to remove them from my cart & click the Add Sale Selection buttons which added them to the area at bottom of the browser & had a Proceed to Checkout button.
The nice part about Audible is you get to keep everything in your library forever.
it's not necessary to keep a membership at all times, let it go for a year or 2 and come back when you feel like it. I have been a member off and on for 15 years or more and I can honestly say after all the free trials and BOGO or BOG2 deals over the years my average cost per book is probably under $3 each. I currently have 235 titles. My first yearly membership was on sale for $69 back in the day. I also pay for Spotify even though I can listen to the radio any time I want for free. Sometimes it's just a matter of preference.
I just wish it was more 'portable'.
I'm reading a 9 book series. The first 3, I bought off of Google Books, and they can be downloaded as .M4B files, which VLC can play easily.
The next 3, I bought from the author directly - and they are available as .MP3 or .M4B -both super portable (no connectivity needed).
The last 3 I'm getting through Audible, as it works out to about half-price (vs $25-30/book), but there's doesn't seem to be a flexible way to play them, due to the .aax ? format it downloads in. I'm no fan of the Audible 'Cloud Player' (PC) or Android app. Bookmarks are less than intuitive, and if my PC reboots, it automatically starts playing (I leave it open and paused) and I lose my place. It's highly aggravating.
