I thought this was an old/resolved issue. I have 22 Kasa devices in use in my local-only Home Assistant setup (a collection of wall switches and SmartPlugs), and they're all still working fine. My last purchases were a 4-pk of these SmartPlugs (the EP10) back on 5/17/21, and a KP115 on 6/21/21. They all work fine in local-only mode, including working with the Kasa App local-only. I have them all deregistered from the cloud, and block their internet access at my router to prevent them from doing a clandestine firmware upgrade, but they worked "out of the box" local-only with the firmware they were shipped with.

Just to test for myself if the latest devices being shipped no longer work local-only, I went ahead and bit on this deal (not a bad price and I can always use more). If indeed the current firmware no longer supports local-only use, they'll be going back. The devices I already have will work just fine for the rest of their lifetime so long as I don't allow a firmware upgrade (assuming newer firmware does indeed break local-only mode).

If anyone has any real-life recent experience with this issue, I'd love to hear it. I'm wondering if perhaps the region makes a difference, as there are references to the UK version (vs. the US version). I never experienced any of the local-only issues abuzz on the Home Assistant forums back in 2020, so never messed with the beta firmware that was made available back then (and is no longer available as of Feb 2021). I concluded (perhaps erroneously) that the US firmware wasn't affected.
Shame they've messed these up for Home Assistant

I'm all up-to-date with firmware, and I set up Home Assistant 2 weeks ago for the first time. Everything works for me. Sounds like the problem was fixed. Located in the US by the way. Also, none of my devices are on a Kasa account, local access only. They still get firmware updates and time sync.

Looks like they don't work with apple's home thing. Great deal otherwise. Ty for sharing.
