I'm in the market for one but I wouldn't get this one because it doesn't have any advanced security camera tech like the 453b does. The malware stuff appears easily patched prior to infection which if you bought now and new would already be taken care of.
Need a 4-bay for this price… my Tk-431 is getting backplane issues
It's going to be hard to find a 4-bay at this price point. You're usually looking at around $350 even on sale for that if you want something in new condition from a known brand.
They all were vulnerable and have been patched <I believe>, but don't use snap cloud and it's ok. It's easy enough to set up your own VPN making that unnecessary anyway.

They I believe have been patched, but I'd prefer the ones with more advanced features personally over this. I have the 453BE. I kind of wish I splurged for an even bigger one personally.
one of the nas devices that has been attacked repeatedly by ransomware bots.
if you buy it: disable the admin account, close all ports, disable upnp, disable port forwarding for it at your router, and only allow it outside of your network via a vpn connection.

Overkill, More like: just don't use their stupid Qnap cloud service and patch it up to date and you'll be fine.
Except that you're taking away functionality that's not at all at risk. Do you burn your house down to get rid of ants too, or are you just the typical slickdeals poster with no actual knowledge of risk mitigation who read something online once and wants to appear smart to those that don't know better?

who read something online once and knows nothing about the subject at hand? such as yourself and your assumption about me and my computer background. worked in IT a long time, sometimes for DOD, sometimes for fortune 500. again, its all about how much you value your data. random assumptions about people online who you know nothing about is not wisdom, rather the complete opposite.

Oh WOW You worked for the DOD, where it's common to be upgrading systems to windows 2000 in 2006!! what an accomplishment!!!!
How about instead of thinking you need to spread FUD with a master class in infosec, you keep to the topic at hand which is the vulnerabilities of Qnap which have been patched and were related to their Qnap cloud. Your imbecilic advice was akin to saying "instead of taking care of the recall on your car, throw it away and take the bus."
People like you are what make SD a total shithole of bad information. I'll bet you're one of the people always whining about airflow in every PC case thread too, aren't you?
