Yes buts it's a low 85 watts, tiny battery, and bad thermals. These low end MSI's are not recommended

At first I thought this was a really good deal. I bought a GP66 for $1700 with similar specs. But yes, with that low TDP and worse thermals (I guess so it can be thinner?) The GL66 won't perform nearly as well. GPU TDP makes a massive difference in performance. I had a 85W ASUS 3070 that was being outperformed by 3060s in other laptops.

Because it's cheaper to manufacture. You don't have to spend as much money on the cooling solution and it's possible that they're also buying lower-binned parts from nVidia that can't high the higher frequencies anyway so the performance is cut down and the power draw reduced. However since it's "technically" still a RTX 3070 GPU they can still call it that and trick the many customers that don't know any better. The whole system is honestly pretty shady by nVidia. In previous generations they circumvented issues with false advertising by using the "Max-Q" and "Max-P" designations - like what the fark do those even mean? The average consumer just browsing for a new gaming laptop for Johnny's christmas gift will have no farking clue. I'm betting plenty of unsuspecting folks bought laptops with Max-Q labels thinking it meant "Maximum Quality" or something.

they are reusing the same chassis to save on cost.
the RTX 2070 max q is a 90W part, therefore a lot of laptops was designed with that in mind (both cooling the power supply). the RTX 20 series and 30 series use the same connector (and probably 40 series), so the modules are completely replaceable, which is a good news both to customers and manufactures.

the RTX 30 series dropped the max q, and the performance of the 30 chip depend almost entirely on wattage and cooling, which is unforuntaely for laptops that build with 90W in mind.

if you gonna go with a 3070 or 3080, you best bet is to get one that provide 130w to 150 power to GPU. as far as i know, the only laptop that does that is the lenovo legion 7

I owned 2 MSI laptop, the hinges broke on both of them. Otherwise, they were only ok. Keys popped off the one. Various internal issues. I bought because they looked cool (was 10 years younger and dumber) wouldn't recommend. I stick with Dell these days.

This is bs... I've have my msi laptop since Nov 2019 now, and it still runs great, and has had no hardware issues, or software issues... sounds like someone just doesn't know how to properly take care of electronics🙄. So if you ask me, they're a decent brand, and this laptop listed is a decent buy for a 3070 even at 85w, you an still play next Gen games, and can basically replace a tower pc easily with this. I have a 2700x, and Vega 64 tower and this out specs it even at 85w, and my tower still beasts at 4 years old... don't listen to the negative hype, besides the one person that actually had one, or two, that clearly beats things the hell up, it's all hate talk.

My high schooler has had an MSI 1660 laptop for over a year now with no issues. Great brand and bang for the buck!

Pretty sure, if you are creative, you can just flash the higher power vios from a similar machine. I did this for my mobile 2060 to go from 90w to 115

I have one of these from a few generations ago with the 1060 and Core i7 6700HQ, got it in Dec 2016 and it still works well for gaming and productivity. The speakers are ass though, the HP I had before it had "Beats audio", which probably meant they spent 50 cents on the drivers instead of 5 cents, but it sounded way better.

True - good point. These MSI machines run hot by default (but quiet). Wonder if ramping the fans would help.
