I have been using the paid version for years. Does it actually provide more practical values than the free version?
I use its antivirus and ransom ware prevention utility and nothing else.

If you only need protection on up to 3 PCs, this is a good deal. For PCs, it does almost the same things as BitDefender Total security - the 'Overview' tab at the link in the OP compares the products, and there's only a few differences. (But note - BitDefender Internet Security doesn't work on Android or Mac OS according to that chart.)

For $19 + tax - about $10 per year, it's really reasonable - and this is a very highly recommended product. BitDefender is at the very top of most lists of the best products.

Does not work on Mac. You need Total Security / Family bundles or the stand-alone Mac AV products for that.

I'm wondering what happens after the two years is up?

Last year I purchased a one year/3 PC deal from Avira at $9.99. My bad because I didn't keep track of the time and found out that the default was to automatically renew after the year was up. I found this out by discovering a PayPal charge of $43.99 from Avira.

Although I did like the protection I went back to Windows Defender as the no-cost option. After some stuff with customer service, Avira did finally refund the charge.

You have to download it, and there's a product key. In other threads, people have said the subscription doesn't start until you enter the product key - and you can wait to download it (which is what I'm doing). That's what I'm counting on because I don't need it for 3 months.

Using a one-use credit card number would have prevented that (many cards will allow you to generate such numbers). Or check the site you purchase it to make sure this won't happen with any digital subscription product (yeah, I know you don't always think of that, but your comment reminded me to check NewEgg - I didn't see anything like that and I don't leave a credit card number on file at NewEgg, so I don't think it will happen.

If you just need excellent protection without allthe paid extras, BD Free is one of the best free AVs

Bitdefender Total Security 2021 can work on MAC, VPN version is more cheaper. but you have to activate with VPN and global use after activation.

Bitdefender Total Security will probably be heavily discounted for BF/CM as usual. That's the time I usually renew my licence.
