The last time this deal came up, I bought $15 gift card in-store and got the email confirmation from AmEx instantly. So...yes you can buy gift card. Use it with BOGO to make it better deal.

This deal didn't work for me. I purchased a $15 gift card in-store and I didn't immediately get the email confirmation like I usually do on qualifying offers. I waited for the charge to post to see if I would get the credit then and I didn't. I just chatted with customer service through the app and was told my purchase didn't qualify because gift card purchases are excluded. I went back and forth with them that nowhere does it state gift card purchases in-store are excluded, only gift card purchases online and through the app, which is stated in the terms.

Bought $15 subway GC instore today and did not receive an email notification, transaction is pending and showing subway is the merchant. The offer is not appearing to be redeemed.

Looks like Amex is able to use level 3 data to disqualify GC purchases.

Amex is being stupid about this.
What does it matter if I buy a sub now or buy a gift card now to buy a sub later.
Either way I am spending money at Subway.

Agree because Subway only carries their own GC. I guess Amex is working on disqualifying GC purchases in Amex offers across the board.

Surprised to see $5 credit was received two days after the $15 GC transaction. No email communication at all but I got the $5 credit.
