It's just for the gift, unless it's a special or limited edition, then you would need to preorder since there is limited stock.

Yeah, games rarely sellout. Bonus gift and/or content is the only consistent benefit for pre-ordering. However, there are certain circumstances where I think preordering should be considered:
1) Small development company: Shelf space will be given to games with high preorder sales even if they aren't big company games. It's a form of support for the developers.
2) Limited Run Games and other such companies: since these games are designed to run out you need to pre-order to guarantee the physical copy.
3) My Best Buy: With a My Best Buy account you get a $10 certificate for select video game preorders that can be used on anything in the store. (I haven't done this in a while so I don't know if it's still in effect).
If you're thinking about preorders for the benefits, it should be noted you can just do it after the pre-release reviews have come out to see if the game is any good.
