If you have a cheap undesirable bike, then it'll work just fine to keep an opportunist from hopping on and riding off. But if your bike might have some decent resale value to a thief, they could quickly break this lock with hand tools.

This isn't a great quality lock, but the quality of lock you need depends on what you're locking and where you're locking it.

If you are really worried 2 locks is a good approach. One of these and a D lock. Kryptonite is still a good brand I think

If you have something that someone else really wants, then nothing will "prevent" them from getting it, just a matter of how much time and effort they will need to put in. Kryptonite brand has gone down in quality, but as a lock for riding around the neighborhood, this one is fine.

if you live in a city, this lock is not good enough. a tin snips could probably defeat it easily. if you have a nice bike and aren't looking to buy a new one, spend more on a lock.

How is this compared to the 12mm one linked above? Is it just a few bucks more because it's a combination lock as opposed to a key?

Also, I can't believe the "lock mount" is a freakin' zip tie. Kryptonite used to be a top brand but it sounds like they've gone the way of diamondback and other brands that used to be top tier.

I just want it to discourage someone from stealing my crappy bike I occasionally ride with my son.

Wouldn't the other one, 12mm thick, be better than this?

I ride a cheap bike even though I can afford a $1000+ one. Can lock it anywhere. In three years, and about 7,000 miles, the only theft was seat and seat post (was quick release kind), and another time someone took my front wheel (was quick release too), but I walked around the nearby blocks, saw the guy with it and took it back.

I use a long 11.5" or 9.5"? ONGuard combination U-lock. Don't have to carry around a key. Combination is default combo code. The long lock lets me take off front wheel and lock up through frame and back wheel PLUS detached front wheel, and even detachable seat. Sometimes I lock it up and watch movies.

I ALWAYS lock my bike though. Most theft of cheap bikes is when one leaves it unattended for even 30 sec to a minute. A thieving style is to opportunistically jump on a bike and ride away if said thief sees someone leave bike unattended because they are doing a quick transaction, like buying a lottery ticket and is thinking 'I won't be long'. Thieves know they can hop on the bike seconds after owner walks in convenience store, and ride away faster than guy can chase him on foot, even if owner sees thief approaching bike. Since theif can ride away, 'catching' thief also ALWAYS means it's all ready too late by DEFAULT. Anyone who can get this through there thick skull will have ~95% less chance of getting bike stolen.

I would buy this crappy Krytonite Combo lock, so when I ride my bike in other counties, or see a movie, I put second lock on. No one wants to steal a cheap bike with two locks on it, that require two methods of breaking locks. But don't have enough stuff to buy to make free shipping.

tl;dr If you ever think 'I'll just be a moment' your bike is at extreme risk of getting stolen.

Also, if you have a bike worth any money, it will eventually, sooner or later, get stolen even if locked, if left unattended for long enough to break a lock (seconds or a min).

Slick Deal = Cheap functional bike + convenient long combination U-Lock.

Thicker = slightly more secure, but as someone else noted, that only means it takes a bit longer for the determined would-be thief to cut through.

I think some people prefer combo over key for convenience; one less thing to keep track of, but as for which is harder to "crack", I don't think it matters because they prefer to simply cut the wire.

Thanks OP. Been looking for a combo lock! Tired of losing keys.

Most bike locks can be easily picked/cut. If someone really wants your bike, they're going to get it. I just want to keep my bike safe from the general crack heads.
