Home Depot has done this for many years on the first Saturday of the month. In non-pandemic times, you actually build the kits in-store. Some locations require pre-registration while others allow you to just walk in.
Lowes started doing them again within the last year or so after stopping for a while. They give them out on the second Saturday of the month.
No politics needed, friend. A lot of parents, myself included, just want their kids to be preoccupied for 10 mins. These workshops used to be a very fun social event.
Since the pandemic, we've asked CS the first saturdays and usually they are out of kits fast at the HDs near us. We've been lucky once.

Do you know how is it working in the pandemic times? For both Home Depot and Lowes.
The ping pong ball was September's free DIY kit. I assume they sell them the month after they were free. This month the fire chief's car is the free DIY kit. The will probably sell the fire cheif car in November.
sirgoombahHome Depot or Lowes? Link comes up with HD but post references Lowes.
This free DIY kit is picked up at Home Depot. It is referring to Lowe's as Lowe's also does a free DIY kit - so if you were interested in the Lowe's kit you would might be interested in the Home Depot free kids kit.
My daughter's personal favorite was the Field Goal Game - September 2018.
At the time she was 8 year old and would play with it on Sunday afternoon's while the games would be on.
Back in the day - we did at least 12 different kits and it was something we did together. That is how she learned how to use a hammer and nails all by herself.
