I have a full set of taps & dies, so I am not planning to buy this. BUT, I wonder if anyone has experience with these bits/taps? I'm generally curious to know if they can drill and tap...usually cutting oil, a handle, and slow+steady pressure are needed for clean threads. Seems that this would not work well, but it's a "thing" so maybe it does? Any thoughts?

only time i've seen these word well are in an oil bath, on an automated machine... i have to doubt these work well at all in normal use, like in a drill.

I had a server rack I was refinishing and I broke off a threaded stud which olds on the the latch part for the side panels to latch onto.

I didn't really want the expense of a full tap set at this time, so I got these (I got a set of 5, but they were dewalts and cost me $30). It worked like a damn charm.

I'm sure if you are tapping a lot of stuff and probably thicker material, you should use a traditional tap set, but for the 1/8" material I did, it was great. I don't have experience with any other thicknesses, but I"m gonna pick some more up at this price (esp 1/4-20) becaause I think for a quick job it works great, but I think they might be a bit fragile (though mine haven't broken yet)

Well I ordered then got a call from my local lowes telling me it was a dead sku and they have none in stock and they will be cancelling my order Frown

Edit: this was only for the 1 1/4-20 I tried to buy. They were not available for ship to store or delivery. the 2 5/16-18 I got are still on order with ship to store.

I've got another brand of these drill/taps and typically use them to chase bad threads, or to re-tap electrical boxes that have stripped out #6 threads with a #8 thread instead. They work great for that. If making a new hole in something hard, I recommend a pilot hole first to get rid of the bulk of material and take it easy. But they do work well.

I've not used the dewalt, but did use an Irwin while installing some access control devices. We ended up snapping it off after something like 20 holes in 3/8 steel. We just gave it too much power and it caught and snapped about halfway up.

I'm sure we did everything wrong with it, but it got the job done.
