They most likely won't check your status. I've ordered many items from the education store and they never checked my purchases so there's a good chance you won't get checked either.

Give it a shot.

it has always been this price on education side but still better than paying full retail i suppose. if you're going to order this, you should take advantage of the airpods promo. basically, free airpods with mac purchase. you'll have to pay the difference for airpods pro or wireless case. ends 9/27

The deals are in-store only. Looks like they may ship some simple stuff online but they keep the good stuff or pickup.

I definitely want to hold out for 16GB on this. Getting clsoe, would rather skip the pods and save a little cash though.

I thought I saw open box for some items online which you can pickup later. Not sure for Apple products though.

That may well be - I get the impression it depends on whether the deal is good enough to get people in the door, so it might depend on the popularity of a product or how good a deal it is.

Nice deal if you combine with the Target $10 for $100 apple gift card offer (even better with red card 5% off). You just need to go to the store and buy multiple apple gift cards but each one in separate transaction and redeem right there in the store (to avoid gift card being emptied before you reach home)
