the difference between a 4k fire tv and an apple tv is like having a 10-yr-old saab versus a lexus

the number of times i've had to force close/restart a fire tv is…well, more than i can count. netflix has been broken on it for as long as amazon's had streaming devices (they seemingly don't want it to work well). the number of ads on the fire homepage is obscene. the slowness/lag for the menu ui is a huge drag.

none of these problems have showed up for me on the apple tv.

i would not recommend it to those who can't really afford it, but if you have the disposable income, it really does make your streaming tv watching life easier…

…which i realize is the most obscene and privileged sentence i've ever written

If you are into the Apple ecosystem it is the most seamless out there. This comes with a premium for sure which you can argue isn't worth it.

However, for people that have the means and want an effortless entire system for their grandparents, parents, and non tech savvy spouses, you can't beat it. Everything just works.

I have yet to see anything across all android devices that comes close.

Personally, I have a 2017 nvidia shield, but I would get this Apple TV for anyone else in my life without question since it will make my life easier when they have any tech issue.

I think the only reason you can use to defend the price is the simplicity caused be being a perfect fit in the ecosystem.

I used to have iPhones for my wife and I, fire sticks on the TVs and fire tablets for the kids. The wife could never figure out how to work the kids tablets on road trips and it was challenging using the fire stick (yes, I realize they are pretty easy to use). Replaced them all with iPads and Apple TV's and don't hear one gripe from the wife about how she can't "fix" any of them. Worth every penny!!

I truly don't understand the price of Apple TVs. This isn't hate at all. I'll accept the thumbs down that are coming, but given all the products that are out there, I just don't get it. I'm willing to listen to reasons why too.

It doesn't run a lot better than a $50 chromecast/google tv. Also you can't do nearly as much with it.
Nah, my chromecast reboot itself more than I can count already these two months while just using plex. Gonna get an Apple TV when the price is right for sure

It's been $169 at Walmart and Amazon for months
That target price is also for the 32GB version not the 64GB.

You are definitely right on the one hand. I just want to throw in my two cents. For those with interest of doing shady stuff, homebrew, sideloading, even an unstable but more open ecosystem of Amazon or nvidia Shield offer certain benefits, not for everyone

I don't see anything below Apple TV price that performs anything like it, the A12 is a beast. I have no experience with the Nvidia shield but it's similarly priced.

The cheaper alternatives feel slow in comparison. That might sound meaningless, but you can easily see the difference, and it matters when you're already dumping so much money on the TV (plus however much on sound). The remote is also very simple for people who get confused with multiple remotes, and feels good to use, you don't need to think about it.

There's no ads on the front page, less tracking or annoying recommendations, it's just a much cleaner experience overall than any of the cheap boxes for sure. After a few months of having one, I'll never skimp out on a living room TV box again, it just doesn't make any sense.

I use my 4K fire tv and have zero issues. I use Netflix, Disney+, hbomax, Hulu.. I don't even know how to force close on fire tv, I've never had to do that to any apps.

Apple TV also pairs with airpods and i believe they have spatial audio now
Quick correction: it does NOT have Spatial Audio. Only iPhones and iPads do so far. Wish it did, but no luck yet.

I have both, and can't agree with your statement of Saab Vs Lexus. What do you mean by "Fire TV 4K"? Is it a Stick or Cube. Regardless, Fire TV 4K Stick has been amazing for me, it shouldn't take away the fact that also enjoy my Apple TV 4K. But your comparison is way off. Barely remember last time I had to reboot my Fire TV. But it happens a lot with my Apple TV. It has wake up and HDMI CEC issues with both of my TVs, Vizio and TCL. There are disadvantages and advantages with each streamer. Apple TV's UI and animations are more fluid and smooth. HBO Max was broken for ages, not sure if they fixed it. You can't sideload apps outside of the App Store and it doesn't support Dolby Profiles other than Profile 5. Or have you heard heard of TiviMate or Smart YouTube? Let's just say the Fire TV is not for you, but don't generalize your experience to others.

Me neither, Fire TV can literally handle Dolby Vision Gemini Man at 4k/60FPS without any buffer on WiFi. IDK why this guy/girl hates Fire TV so much. Perhaps he is referring to the original Stick from 2014 lol

Facts. based on experience, it's either Roku or Apple TV that I've recommended.

How close is a new model on the horizon? They rarely discount these more than $10-15 from what I've seen in the past.
