the number of times i've had to force close/restart a fire tv is…well, more than i can count. netflix has been broken on it for as long as amazon's had streaming devices (they seemingly don't want it to work well). the number of ads on the fire homepage is obscene. the slowness/lag for the menu ui is a huge drag.
none of these problems have showed up for me on the apple tv.
i would not recommend it to those who can't really afford it, but if you have the disposable income, it really does make your streaming tv watching life easier…
…which i realize is the most obscene and privileged sentence i've ever written
However, for people that have the means and want an effortless entire system for their grandparents, parents, and non tech savvy spouses, you can't beat it. Everything just works.
I have yet to see anything across all android devices that comes close.
Personally, I have a 2017 nvidia shield, but I would get this Apple TV for anyone else in my life without question since it will make my life easier when they have any tech issue.
I used to have iPhones for my wife and I, fire sticks on the TVs and fire tablets for the kids. The wife could never figure out how to work the kids tablets on road trips and it was challenging using the fire stick (yes, I realize they are pretty easy to use). Replaced them all with iPads and Apple TV's and don't hear one gripe from the wife about how she can't "fix" any of them. Worth every penny!!

You are definitely right on the one hand. I just want to throw in my two cents. For those with interest of doing shady stuff, homebrew, sideloading, even an unstable but more open ecosystem of Amazon or nvidia Shield offer certain benefits, not for everyone

The cheaper alternatives feel slow in comparison. That might sound meaningless, but you can easily see the difference, and it matters when you're already dumping so much money on the TV (plus however much on sound). The remote is also very simple for people who get confused with multiple remotes, and feels good to use, you don't need to think about it.
There's no ads on the front page, less tracking or annoying recommendations, it's just a much cleaner experience overall than any of the cheap boxes for sure. After a few months of having one, I'll never skimp out on a living room TV box again, it just doesn't make any sense.

I use my 4K fire tv and have zero issues. I use Netflix, Disney+, hbomax, Hulu.. I don't even know how to force close on fire tv, I've never had to do that to any apps.
Quick correction: it does NOT have Spatial Audio. Only iPhones and iPads do so far. Wish it did, but no luck yet.
I believe if you've never tried Apple TV+ then it'll allow you to try it out for 3 months
