nowadays, Office Depot are marking thing higher than what their value is. Even is 100% back, but it will be more future use. Amazon is selling $16 for 72 with other brands for AA battery. If you have time can deal with office depot, sure. Otherwise, not worthy buying from them...

Nowadays? Where have you been?

They always have charged way over retail value for these.

The way to do this to your advantage is to:

Be a rewards member of course.
Spend $10 a month out of your pocket. This deal is a great opportunity to do that.
Recycle 10 ink cartridges that month which rewards you $20 to spend there later.
To cash rewards out, look for price matching opportunities. Guess what? You can do a PM for this deal also! The only benefit is less taxes out of your pocket but you will get less rewards, which is a good thing because that means less money tied up to use there.
Buy stamps with rewards about to expire as a last-ditch plan if you don't find anything you need that can be price matched for a reasonable price.
Another option is to look for sale items or clearance items while recycling and/or shopping in person or online.

This is the best possible use of your side-gig of OD/OM rewards. If you don't do these things, not much benefit, but still some.

The amount you paid by rewards is not eligible for earning rewards on that purchase so the "roll" concept will not work.

This is the worst way to use rewards. As many people pointed out, you only get what you pay out of pocket, so you will not earn anything back for the amount you used your rewards for, so if you had $10 in rewards and batteries cost $16 after coupon, you'd only get $6 back in rewards, essentially forfeiting the original rewards amount you had rather than earning from it.

Frankly, the response was not literally true. They were mainly pointing out the policy error of them thinking they could roll the rewards, making it the best way.

Your way is like getting them for half off. No the worst if you are playing the short game, and need lots of batteries soon. I have plenty, because of my strategy.

I would wait until the following month for a similar offer and achieve my $10 minimum out-of-pocket spend for next month. That is better (for me) because I am in for the long game. It will earn me $20 more rewards for recycling my 10 ink cartridges then.

If you are in the long game you would not be doing the best by using rewards to buy more of these, because of the very regular pattern of them offering this type of deal for batteries almost constantly.

I suggest you use the rewards for other things you need and price-match if not reasonably priced. So it all depends on your goals. Best but more complicated, or okay and easy. In fact, you could do better than half off (even after price matching), if you buy your batteries in bulk (as you seem to want to do) on sale from many potential sources for Alkalines.

When I do all of this, all of the batteries are just a bonus to me.

I pm often when I use rewards. If you can show them a online price, I bet they PM.. I dont have club membership, so I cant see Costco prices, but thought of joining Costco just to use it for PMing when using rewards.
