Just a heads up - this company does some major bait and switch. I got the Flume 1 and they have consistently removed features since launch, including the text alerts which were pretty critical as that was one of the only ways to setup multi device alerts.

Removed Brazilian Rainforest Store link per moderator's request - see reason below. Definitely don't go there directly and search, as it would circumvent any share paid back to the site owner.

Yes, but that deal can't be posted on SlickDeals because it's a 3rdparty seller with less than 1000 feedback. The rules don't allow those to be posted here, regardless of whether the seller is the manufacturer or not. I've been told by the moderation staff that the application of this rule is a a private matter and is not to be discussed in the Hot Deals forum, so if there is any concern about the rule, we should take it to Deal Talk or one of the appropriate forums.

I've had this for a few months now after dealing with some ridiculous high water bills.

It's a nice to have and is probably a savior to some, but I've soured a bit on the company after they've introduced this subscription plan. Allegedly, I'm grandfathered into their "detailed" data and AI stuff, but it's the same data that was available prior to their subscription model, so just an annoying money grab IMO.

Setup is surprisingly easy and is seemingly very accurate. Guess overall it's recommended if you're seriously worried about leaks, but you're going to get a lesser product than it was prior to the subscription, or pay more in their subscription to get access to their data metrics.

What's the difference between this model and Amazon one?
SD won't get a cut thru Amazon. Which is more than enough reason for me to go there and search it

I purchased the 1st-gen model a few years ago for $50. My local water utility actually partnered with Flume to get the subsidized price. So far it has detected a few leaks, some major (stuck sprinkler valve, slab leak) and a few minor (running toilet). The slab leak was 0.02 gallons per minute and I was able to shut my water off within minutes of detection. That alone saved me thousands of dollars in repairs.

Only negative thing that's happened is the sensor unit died, even after replacing the batteries. I was out of warranty but Flume sent me an entire new kit for free anyways. It does suck that the detailed water usage is now part of a subscription but leak detection is still included for free I believe.

No, this will not turn off water. It is a strap on device which reads the electromagnetic fields from the existing city flow meter. The use case for this is it will read your water and tell you when you are using more, from there you have to shut off the source. There is a competing product called Flo by Moen. It is ~$400 on Amazon. It has an auto shut off feature, but it must be installed on your main pipe. So you will need a licensed plumber (or be handy enough to do it yourself). Some insurance companies do offer discounts on Flo by Moen as it does have the potential to save you thousands in water damage.
So where exactly and how to install this Flume 2?

You just wrap it around water meter inside your home. You can check the list of compatible meters on their website.

Can someone who has this explain what exactly is in the base product with respect to usage data and what needs subscription?
Edit:A blog article from last week says the Detailed Water usage is a subscription feature. Another table shows base product as having "Basic water usage data" which is "Access to last 24 hours of water usage data along with monthly usage data". Does that mean you get detailed views of the last 24 hours with the base product?

We're away for the weekend and got an alert during dinner last night that we had a potential leak. Called our eldest at home who found one of the toilets running. Went through 600 gallons (4 hours of it running), but could have been a lot worse coming home 2 days later. Get one of these.

I was not happy about the removal of SMS as well. When you have multiple devices can't you still get emails? My thought is to use Pushover to set emergency alerts that bust through DnD on my iPhone.

I asked them to support emergency notifications as well like Ring, Pushover and such can do.

I have a Flume and Phyn but both consistently catch small issues (spigot left on dripping, toilet leaks), but I have to give props to Flume catching a major irrigation water leak while I was out of state. Got a notification at 3am and had a neighbor close the valve before major yard erosion damage from 20gal/min leaking constantly on a hill.

This is BS. Slickdeals.net allows deals to be posted by sellers with 0 feedback as long as they pay them for sponsored placement by the deal bots. You can talk in a Deal Talk forum but that has the effect of hiding this chat which makes people think that the rule is fair.

Some home insurance companies also give discounts for these leak detection devices or will give discounts on your premiums for installing them. I have Mercury in SoCal and got my Flume 2 for $75. They had good deals on the Moen Flo too which included installation. https://www.mercuryinsurance.com/leak-detection/

No - it's like a CIA listening device: it has a magnetic sensor which listens for the varying signature of the municipal flowmeter's magnetized flow disk as it spins around. From that signal, it determines the rate of spin and, in turn, the flow. It's why some muni meters don't work - they can't detect the magnetic spinny thing on some, either because of the type of spinny thing or because the muni line meter unit is too well shielded (or too poorly shielded).
Typically a hall effect sensor if anyone is interested in knowing more. They are extremely inexpensive.

I have a Flume 2 from Father's Day 2021 (before they started subscription service). They grandfather old users like me into some features like per-minute readings, sprinkler system usage detection, and usage history/alerts. Indoor device detection is not grandfathered, nor are any new features they come up with in the future.

I also have an Orbit B-Hyve. Flume keeps track of water use per-zone when the accounts are linked, which is cool.
When they originally were selling flume2, they said inside usage details will be available at no additional cost.

"Without sub, real time data is limited to hourly" .. is this true? The main reason to buy is for pipe burst detection, if this forces you to sub then its not worth it at all..
Did you find answer to your question? I am wondering same

That's the intent of the suggestion. And, no, I don't agree with it. I can see some value in not posting every random shill deal by a new 3rd party seller, but it's a ham-fisted rule imho - esp when it comes to the manufacturer. What's worse is that the app auto-posts are regularly utter trash, but they never get removed or even checked by the mod staff. I posted a deal the day before this Anycubic Mono+Cur/Wash2.0+2-500ml bottles of OEM resin for $298, but the Mono seller was a 3rd party with only a few feedback ratings. It arrived in 4 days and the setup is already on my printer bench waiting for final assy and tuning. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
