Had one I purchased from Costco in March 2021. It died on me for no reason last month. Five months of use and the thing just went bye bye. It was plugged into a UPS too.

Otherwise, it seemed to run fine for gigabit internet.

Uh oh, I just bought one. What did you buy after it died?

I guess the good thing is it's from Costco so I can bring it back in two years if it craps out.

Yeah, I returned mine to costco and got a full refund, no questions asked. Did not have the original box or anything, just the AC adapter and the modem itself.

I am just leasing a modem from my ISP right now for $6/month. I am researching other models right now, but might end up just paying the $72/year for a rental. This way, I basically have a perpetual warranty.

Leased ones are usually crap from my experience, slow and laggy.

I never understand why ISP modems/routers are always shitty ones and never meet their standard speed or whatever they promise. Spectrum ifs the biggest liar of them all, combine with $10 monthly rental fee, it makes them one of the biggest thieves.

It's done on purpose. They are usually built specifically for ISPs to lease out. They meet the specs but they are also mass produced and usually locked down/gimped by the ISP.

If possible ask for a plain old modem. Not a combo unit. I've asked every ISP I've ever had and they always are willing to giving me just a vanilla modem and I buy my own router.

I literally have one choice of modem that has voice. Its this one + voice which is 249 on amazon - its crazy how much more it is just to add that. Are people just not using landlines or paying for a separate service?

Landlines are old news unless you have a niche use for it. Even if you don't have cellular coverage, satellite services have been getting better and better, leaving less and less use for landlines.

Of course, this does not apply to businesses.

Can't ever recommend Netgear. They kill hero features after the marketing is based around them. They spam Circle and other services like a pushy salesman. Their products are slower, less reliable, and/or lacking in features when compared to others within their same class (Arris, ASUS, etc.), so don't fall prey to their larger marketing budget and fancy graphics and design.

Perfect, spectrum just walked to my door and offered 400mb for 2 years for 29.99 no fees.

funny.

was with spectrum 3-4 years at 69.99 for 100mb sec, then Metronet came in, 200mb a sec last year for 55 a month, now the door solicitor just came up and said 29.99 for 400mb month for 2 years to go back to spectrum.

this modem should work just fine

Tell that to the better half. Same reason we still 'need' cable tv.

I think people just don't do landlines anymore, unless it's for a specific purpose. Just another number for more scam and robocalls.

A large percentage of people bought Obihai's Obi200 VOIP device [amazon.com] like 8-9 years ago to get free phone service. All you had to do is buy that device, transfer your phone number (from your ISP) to google voice, then pair it with your Obi200. You now have free phone service. You can get e-911 service for like $4 a year I believe and link it to your Obi200. Otherwise 911 won't work. Everyone has a cellphone though. The only downside is if your internet service goes down than so does your VOIP. Again, if you have a cellphone than it really doesn't matter much.

Now you open up your modem possibilities.

I really hate how if you need unlimited internet from Comcast, its cheaper to rent a modem ($25 a month) than it is to pay for unlimited and use your own modem ($30 a month).
