Most people who are complaining about this probably don't know how to use humidifiers properly. If you use distilled water, no calcium dust, etc. If you clean your machine properly and you set the right amount of humidity, no mold growth.

If you run a humidifier, use… at the very least, filtered water. I keep a Brita Pitcher handy for just my humidifiers (because they take so long to get water from other purified sources). Clean them weekly with vinegar/water mixture. Cleaning them regularly is absolutely key or you'll be buying new humidifiers often.

Do you have to clean these constantly in order to prevent mold growing inside the unit?
I never have mold in mine. But I clean it every 5 to 6 weeks to remove the pink algae that builds up in it. I live in the desert, but only recently tried the humidifier this summer when the humidity in the house got into the low 20% range. It really seems to help. I am going to get this bigger one. I have my existing one on a plant stand just above my Winix AM80 air purifier that I bought in store at Costco over a year ago. Both run continuously. The purifier helps circulate the mist from my humidifier!

Don't think this is sold in stores. The listing on the Costco.com site says nothing about may be available in store.

I think that pink stuff is actually mold (serratia marcescens). I have to clean it out of my filter based humidifier about every 3 weeks with bleach if I don't wipe it down weekly. I also wonder if mold can grow inside the unit where it's not visible, or if the UVC light helps prevents that. I might try this one out. Getting tired of buying filters every 3 weeks. Don't want to keep buying distilled water either.

Use RO water. However, most 5+ stage RO systems have a stage that adds minerals after removing everything from the water. I have a hose bypassing that stage which allows me to get water with < 4ppm. Also helps with mineral deposits in the humidifier.
That's a great idea, but what about speed? Wouldn't that just be a slow trickle?

If i'm not mistaken, tank is pre alkaline/mineral step, but after RO membrane, so pressure should be decent

i bought a warm mist humidifier from walmart.
a month later, it stopped working.
there was a layer of something (calcium?) around the ultrasonic device that turns the water to mist.
tried to chip it off with a screwdriver but it wouldnt chip off easy.

returned it.

does this $60 humidifier calcify around the ultrasonic device?
Just soak it in vinegar once in a while.

Suggest maybe swapping for a cat, they are self-cleaning.

Yes, exactly. I responded to KenanSD that this was a great idea, that I never thought of. Yes, AFTER the tank, there is usually always ONE and sometimes TWO inline filter units. The first is a post-treatment filter that's in almost all systems. Some new systems have a mineralization or alkalization filter supposed to diffuse minerals and raise PH into the mildly alkaline area. (as I understand it this is similar to some trendy bottled waters that advertise PH9+). I figured it was a good idea for drinking. But yeah now I can see why you want to tap before that filter if you have one (most older systems don't have that anyway but one I got recently did).

PH for those wanting PH 9 water hoping it will help if you have GERD or some other issue related to stomach acid, my gastroenterologist told me, well, your stomach is around 3 and the water is PH 9. From High-school chemistry this basically means the PH 9 water isn't really going to do much to affect your stomach acid level (hint: difference from PH 7, plus a logarithmic (log10) scale).
EDIT I meant PS in the paragraph above but when I saw it PH was funnier so Ieft it that way...

Yes, certainly no reason to "return" something as defective.
It's like, "I left my food in the pan on high and now it's a dark crust -- my pan must be defective"

As you get rid of water (i.e. the machine is doing what it's supposed to do), the minerals build up. That's why the discussion on this board about using demineralized water (which is not necessarily the same as bottle drinking water). Or various filter techniques as discussed here.
But in general, occasional cleaning, both rinsing, scrubbing, and treatment with white vinegar (cheap and easy to get in 1 Gal jugs) are necessary for anything that boils or vaporizes water.

These are perfect if you want to coat everything in your house with a fine calcium dust!
The dust also makes your range/furnace flames orange. Freaked me out one time when I thought I had carbon monoxide problem in the house.
