Not sure if 5900x is comparable though they're both rated @ 105w tdp and iirc, according to amd, 90c is fine.

I guess it's silicon lottery at play.

I only have silver grade cpu accdg to ctr app. In a pure base 500dx w/ 3 default fans, I'm using air cooler drp4 and with pbo & co along w/ 4 sticks of crucial ram - 64gb @ 1.42v cl 14-17-17-34 oc, I avg 80c and peak mid/high 80s on cb23 scoring 22k+ and 59ns on ram in aida64. P95 & memtest error free too.

Thanks, though the server is already running on a 3000G so all I have to do when I'm ready is swap the CPU. It's is all about efficiency because it runs 24x7 in my bedroom and I prefer to run my A/C as little as possible. I also don't want to lose expansion slots to a GPU.

For those having heating problems, try Noctua's Dh15. I was using a coolermaster aio that came with a prebuilt I bought. I had an overheating warning. I had to keep tweak some bios settings, but I have yet to see this go to 90 since using my DH15. I also have a Corsair 5000d airflow case. If the 5900x is available at Bestbuy, I might just sell this.

I can confirm this. I also use an NH-D15 and never approach 90 either with my 5800X. I'm using a Be Quiet 500DX case bought on sale for $80 and only three case fans.

Microcenter is inaccessible to most people. I have one 2 hours away but it's in a state that charges sales tax and I live in a state that doesn't. So I have one that's accessible if I want to drive 4hrs but the sales tax thing makes it useless.
