Store credit does not expire. Generally they give it to you on a gift card that you can misplace, or can become damaged.

All old consoles are discontinued, and the vast majority do not appreciate in value, especially when later models have backwards compatibility

I just traded in my xbox X, Playstion 4 Pro (refurb) and 1 extra xbox controller. Total gift card was $673.92. I bought a Powerup membership which was $14.99 but the special now is you get $10 in points that will hit your account the next day. It would have been super quick if the Xbox had not needed an update.
