If backup storage is what you need, the qnap is better for the price but the ds220+ is good for Plex streaming.

This is a entry level NAS but it is very well reviewed by professional reviewers. It will do an excellent job as a file storage and cloud sharing device, it will also work well for plex and media as long as your not transcoding on the fly, as this only has a ARM processor. In most cases if your playing 1080 p content within the house you will have no issues what so ever with this. It also has full access to the app catalog so can still use it for a NVR for security cameras, among many other things.

Not really an apples (ARM) to apples (INTEL) comparison if someone is spending $100 more better to just spend $100-150 more and get the Qnap 251D when it goes on sale for $230-$270, its light years ahead of the DS220+.

I purchased this with the intention of having my own Google photos server. I saw their QuMagie software and thought it looked decent enough. Unfortunately, no matter what I do, I could not get my phone (had both Android and iPhone btw) to upload my photos to this NAS. I tried multiple apps and they were all crap with very confusing menus. It was very disappointing.

The only good thing that came out of this is that Plex worked surprisingly well. I don't really know what "transcoding" is so was quite worried but so far I've yet to encounter issues streaming. At worse, turning on subtitles can create a couple minutes of pause but once it starts going again, no issues.

I also want to point out that to set one up you have to be a little bit technically inclined. They don't do a good job of explaining stuff. E.g. when setting up the device it'll ask you if you want thick or thin volume, I honestly still don't quite know what that means but I think description for thin volume mentioned it's the more traditional way so I ended up just picking that.
