1 star reviews were due to a miss-type in the instruction manual. You hold the start button for 3 sec to turn on. Push 1 sec to turn off.
Has a lever on the outside you can pull to adjust the flame. Lever shifts a vent inside the grill.
Have this grill. I had a slight grease leak from the main chamber. Custom support is awesome. 7 days a week they answer calls. They sent silicone to seal and when that didn't work they sent a brand new grill and told me to return the first to Costco. This grill is dead accurate on temperature, has a shelf, and comes with a cover. You can't beat the price. If you don't need WiFi (which I find kinda dangerous in the first place since you should be attending your grill) it's perfect.

Make sure you read the reviews. The 1-star reviews seem abundant and kind of scary.

My buddy had one and said you had to bring it to 350, then drop down to whatever temp you wanted... seems a little weird (and inefficient), but other than that he had positive things to say about it.
I've owned multiple pellet grills. They operate in the same way. It is advisable to bring the grill to 350 for a handful of minute to sort of sterilize it and kill any of the bad bacteria that has build up. That bacteria may not kill off in the lower smoking ranges.

For those who have it, what's the capacity like? Could I fit a butt and a rack of ribs there, or is it too small?

I've got the vertical unit and I like it a lot, but it's just a smoker. This one would be a gift that would get use for both.

Looks like a pit boss Classic with the added tray in the front. I'd buy this especially for the Costco warranty. But you can't really kill a smoker.

If it is ONLY smoking that you want to do, you may want to look at something like a Masterbuilt electric smoker. On the various online BBQ and smoking forums, MES owners rave about their results all the time, and many of them have tried other methods and brands. Nothing is easier, and they're well built for pretty cheap.

If you want something more versatile, a pellet grill may be a better option. With one like this or a Pit Boss you can smoke and due true low-and-slow BBQ or turn up the heat and do direct grilling. This would be jack of all trades that's pretty good at multiple types of cooking rather than just being a good smoker. Also good if you'd like an easy way to experiment with different woods.
I had an MES for years, although the results were amazing at first it started to slowly breakdown. The wiring coroded inside the rear panel so the heater was inconsistent causing large swings of temp and everything came out like jerky. I took it apart and rewired it and it worked but got a great deal on a charcoal egg smoker. Gave the MES to my neighbor who still uses it. So if you are a DIYer then the MES works.

I've had an egg for years and considering a Masterbuilt gravity smoker. This pellet smoker looks decent but concerned about cost of pellets when I do 12 hr smokes. I use under $2 in lump charcoal vs how much for pellets? I live in Boulder so cook in 60f and higher Temps

Define dead accurate? What kind of temp swings. I've read complaints on traeger that they'll swing +/- 20 degrees whereas recteq is +/- 1 or 2. Obviously this is $1k less than a recteq (rt-1250).

Ordered one, it came back in stock for me!

This looks like an upgraded version of a Pit Boss with a PID controller included, better cart, porcelain grates, free cover, costco return policy, etc.

How does this compare to Traegar? They kinda look the same but it's a huge price difference
Was gonna pull the trigger on a Traeger during a past sale, saw this on clearance instead. Got it and haven't regretted it once. More features and cooking space than the Traeger I was eying. Super happy with my decision.

would love to know as well.
Also, is this a good entry level smoker for someone who has never owned one?
See my other comment for my thoughts vs. Traeger. You really pay for the name with Traegers. This is a total bargain comparatively. Somewhere I read LG is made by the same company as Pit Boss and is a bit like a higher-ene Pit Boss.

I was an entry level guy as well and I love this machine. Probably my single favorite purchase in a long time.

Reviewers are saying you don't have to babysit the temperature with this grill? Kinda confused because it doesn't have wifi or Bluetooth. So don't you still have to babysit this grill for temp because you can't get the temp reading from a phone?

I think since it's a PID, it maintains temp a LOT better than non pid. My espresso machine has a pid in it and it's consistency is much better than one without

At low and slow smoking temps you're probably looking at ~1/2 lb of pellets an hour. Assuming you get your pellets on sale/clearance, 40lbs for $25 at costco, you'll spend about $3.75 for 12 hours. You can get pellets even cheaper when they hit clearance, like right now they are $14 for 40lbs at lowes. Now if you're doing mid range temps(350) it's more like an 1lb an hour($7.50 for 12 hours) and high temps is 2 lbs an hour($15 for 12 hours). Keep in mind that the flavors generated via wood smoke vs charcoal are different, so while pellets might be slightly more expensive they might give you a better flavor(or not depending on tastes!). Pellets are also easier to use so you save time in not having to get the charcoal started.

I tend to use cheaper pellets for fuel and then get other pellets for enchanced smoke flavor and use them in a smoke tube/maze.
