The launch switches are special because they are a dying breed of easily hackable switch devices (new models like patched, Mariko, Switch Lite, and OLED require modchips). You can hack it by using an "rcm jig" (a piece of copper wire in a joycon rail slider) which will exploit the nvidia tegra recovery mode (rcm) particular to these old models and allow full access to the internals of the device by pushing a payload file. This will allow you to install custom firmware and use homebrew software as well as play pirated games.

Technically you can use a paperclip to enter recovery mode but we are no longer cavemen and rcm jigs are readily available for the price of a McChicken on Amazon and Ebay.
This seems like a great trade in deal but I think I'll be keeping my V1 unpatched Switch. It's starting to become rare. 🧐
Special but there's like 6 million of them. You might get another $100 if you're lucky.

Not true.

"Patched" just means the ipatches they apply at the factory which cannot be applied afterwards, so if it's "unpatched" it's hackable forever regardless of what firmware it's on, see https://arstechnica.com/gaming/20...-hackable/

My left joycon is missing the grip and drifts. Will either of these be an issue preventing me from trading it in? Thanks in advance

Wow, would this be worth trading in an OG launch switch? So many hours on it makes me think it may be worth upgrading but then again, I'm not sure if OG switches are more valuable for the homebrew market.
Not sure why you have so many downvotes. I'm wondering the same.

Grip is required and they test for drift, but you never know, they might miss the drift. Might be worth just buying a grip from them

What is the best way to back up all your stuff so you can trade it in? You lose things like Animal Crossing saves, right?

I think if I didn't have a banned v1 from offer up I think I wokd have kept it. But I also have the animal crossing switch.

If you upgraded your launch switch past version 4.1.0, you need a (extremely rare) modchip to hack it just like those with Switch Lite and OLED model.

Thanks for this information. I guess I should just trade in my OG switch then since I have it on the latest update currently.

I just traded in my joycons to buy new ones. For $260, I would've traded in the whole thing. Oh well. At least I have a V1 with new Joy cons now.

Dont think FW 4.1.0 is an issue with unpatched units. It's either unpatched or patched from nintendo.

They allowed me to connect to their store wifi and do the transfer in store. Be sure to YouTube GameExplain's transfer tutorials for data and ACNH transfers. There were 2 others doing the same thing as me. Just call ahead and make sure they are okay with you doing it in-store.

Wish I could've traded in before my oled switch came today. I read you needed both switch to transfer data? It was the only reason keeping me from trading it with the $220 value last week.

I've never traded anything in at GS before and may just jump on this one with my OG Switch.

On a side note, I also have an Xbox One X Scorpio Edition that's been having some issues with the HDMI port, does anyone know if GS will take this for a trade-in? And if so, is it the full value trade-in or do they only do partial value?

Thanks in advance!
