The launch switches are special because they are a dying breed of easily hackable switch devices (new models like patched, Mariko, Switch Lite, and OLED require modchips). You can hack it by using an "rcm jig" (a piece of copper wire in a joycon rail slider) which will exploit the nvidia tegra recovery mode (rcm) particular to these old models and allow full access to the internals of the device by pushing a payload file. This will allow you to install custom firmware and use homebrew software as well as play pirated games.

Technically you can use a paperclip to enter recovery mode but we are no longer cavemen and rcm jigs are readily available for the price of a McChicken on Amazon and Ebay.

This seems like a great trade in deal but I think I'll be keeping my V1 unpatched Switch. It's starting to become rare. 🧐

Not true.


"Patched" just means the ipatches they apply at the factory which cannot be applied afterwards, so if it's "unpatched" it's hackable forever regardless of what firmware it's on, see https://arstechnica.com/gaming/20...-hackable/

Damn, I have an OLED coming next week but I have a feeling this runs through tomorrow like the other console trade promos. Would've been nice to trade in with extra credit after being able to transfer everything.

Just an fyi.. the $40 additional is only if you are buying the new switch. That is what they told me in the store when I bought mine today. Unfortunately I did not have my old switch with me so I asked if I could bring it in later and he said the additional promo amount could not be applied after. I didn't want to risk them running out of stock so I passed on it. I may try to get them to apply it anyway when I trade it in. Maybe he can return mine and ring it up again. We will see.

I would just not open it and bring both to the store. If they're cool, they might just let you return it and immediately repurchase it.

Yes, only for trade in credit. You still can do CASH, but don't expect to get $260, much less. I simply traded my Xbox because I was able to get more trade in credit than I actually paid for it new. I'm waiting until the Switch OLED becomes available which I'll be able to get on or before Black Friday.

I have been following some Baidu boards and there are many chinese users discussing the switch lite generic modchip now entering mass production as of June 2021. In June 2020, a woman was selling soldering and hacking services but she and her husband's store are in Wuhan (as you can imagine, people weren't very enthusiastic about going there).

The main problem with the modchip is that they're selling for around the price of the Switch Lite console itself ($200 USD), so many users disregarded it immediately.

edit: I just checked aliexpress and the modchips are no longer available unless i'm missing something.

Since it has been two months since the announcement of mass production, we may start seeing at least the switch lite modchip become cheaper. Now that OLED is out, we will hopefully see developers examine the new model and determine the route for hacking.

Scored Animal Horizons switch for 230 (after tax) few weeks ago. Realized I'm too cheap to pay $40+ for games... Debating if I should return it, trade it in or just keep it... So far got Undertale and Evoland for it on eShop. Kicking myself for not picking up Link's Awakening for $17 when it was on sale a month or so back

ITs really just a screen update - insides are all the same - I would hold on to maybe a pro version coming
