The launch switches are special because they are a dying breed of easily hackable switch devices (new models like patched, Mariko, Switch Lite, and OLED require modchips). You can hack it by using an "rcm jig" (a piece of copper wire in a joycon rail slider) which will exploit the nvidia tegra recovery mode (rcm) particular to these old models and allow full access to the internals of the device by pushing a payload file. This will allow you to install custom firmware and use homebrew software as well as play pirated games.

Technically you can use a paperclip to enter recovery mode but we are no longer cavemen and rcm jigs are readily available for the price of a McChicken on Amazon and Ebay.
This seems like a great trade in deal but I think I'll be keeping my V1 unpatched Switch. It's starting to become rare. 🧐
Special but there's like 6 million of them. You might get another $100 if you're lucky.

Not true.

"Patched" just means the ipatches they apply at the factory which cannot be applied afterwards, so if it's "unpatched" it's hackable forever regardless of what firmware it's on, see https://arstechnica.com/gaming/20...-hackable/

RE: gift cards, the registers will allow them to do it, and there's multiple ways, too.

When I brought stuff in the other day, they handed me a physical trade card which I then used to purchase an Apple Gift Card without issue.

Today, I told them up front I'd be buying another Apple card, and the girl offered to do it all in one transaction. She rung up my trade ins, which displayed a negative balance owed to me, then scanned the Apple Gift card all on one slip. Super easy.

YMMV on what cards they'll allow you purchase, though. Mine was clear that I could buy absolutely anything in the store, but they did say when they used to carry Amazon cards, it would not let them do that.
Do you know what other merchants are available to purchase the gift cards?

I've heard different stores have different cards, but mine had pretty much all the usual suspects you'd find at any drug/department store gift card wall/kiosk, minus Visa/Amex cards and Amazon cards.

Apple, Microsoft/Xbox, PSN, Steam, Dominos, Subway, Buffalo Wild Wings, Applebees, Lowes, etc.

Wow, would this be worth trading in an OG launch switch? So many hours on it makes me think it may be worth upgrading but then again, I'm not sure if OG switches are more valuable for the homebrew market.
Yes absolutely no way you could get $260 on a V1 switch if you sell it yourself, or even a V2 switch frankly.

The additional $40 credit is what you want and that is only available in store. Also it is YMMV so call before you go in so you can get the full $260 credit.

I would definitely call your local stores ahead of time to see if they are giving the extra $40 bonus. I called two GameStops near my area, only one of them was doing the bonus, the other place was only offering $220. I'm most likely going to hold onto the store credit until Black Friday and see if they have any deals going on then.

Did you trade in the second set of controllers because you don't need them or because there's also a newer or better version of them? I know there's that drift issue that had been ongoing and am just wondering if the current available joycons are an "upgrade".

I have a second set I don't need right now so it makes it the trade up you did to the new Switch version super tempting but know I'll probably have to purchase joycons again in my the future.
The drift issue is really easy to fix. Just send them and mine came back in a week. One didn't really have much drift but they replaced both of them without quesrion.

Yes you can for a V1 Switch. There are people that will pay more just to be able to easily homebrew it. The reason why I'm not selling my Switch. I'll probbaly never do it, but the option is there if I change my mind.

You all shouldn't be trading in your console if you have a launch console. Hack it instead and get all the games for free
Will it matter if I have a latest firmware?

Got a $485+ trade card tonight. Would have been $500 but had to sign up in store for the Pro membership ($14.99). Called beforehand to ensure they were offering the deal. Ends tomorrow (10/9).
Traded Switch V2 ($260), Pro Controller ($40) (don't play dock), and then $200.00 for 5 Switch games (at $40.00 each).
Will use this to either get an OLED Switch with Shin Megami Tensei V or a PS5. Whatever I can get first from GameStop.

If you trade in your siwtch first, can you still get all your saves onto your new switch if you get it later?

No. Any firmware works with the hack 'atmosphere'. What matters is whether or not the console you have is hackable. Only the first gens were hackable. Check your serial number online to find out.

I don't understand the people trading in v1's. Once modified, it can play almost all of the older systems and will forever be able to play any present and future games released for the switch free of payment. The GTA trilogy set is being released for this system. Once modified the switch is basically an all in one game console.
