I'm a father of two and I can tell you that at 3-4 months they can start on liquid soft foods w/ formula. At 6 months with practice they can eat most foods with supervision and no more bottle/formula. Your baby can easily get off formula in 6 months, so get them the best. It's not worth saving $20-50 a month. It's not.

I suggest Organic with A2 milk for easy digestion, less spit up and less gas. A2 milk solves most of the digestive issues with formula, please don't use Sensitive or Comfort version of any formula brand until absolutely necessary

Also, what I meant by soft foods at 4 months are things like oat meal, blended smoothie with real fruit, essentially things that don't require chewing and won't choke.
