My Costco had the Wagyu Ribeye for half off yesterday. I was tempted at the original $100/lb price, but finally grabbed some this time.

This is the Superior, CO store. Seems like some stores are already out of stock and others aren't on clearance yet. For those with stock at full price, I'm guessing they'll go on clearance at some point soon. The * on the price tag means it is discontinued and will no longer be restocked, so for stores with no stock you might be out of luck. The price ending in .97 means it's a manager special, so other stores with stock may or may not follow suit unfortunately.

This item doesn't appear to be on the Costco website so the required link is to an older deal when this first showed up in stores.

What is Wagyu? I remember when I was young we heard about Kobe beef, where the cow is suspended and fed beer. Is this a variation of that?
waygu is a type of breed. kobe is a city in japan that breed these cows. as for beer feed some still do most dont. its just costly due to the type of food given to the cow and the limited land to raise the cow. the most expensive beef is the misayki cow which each farmer is able to only raise 2 virgin females. google it.

What are you doing cruising SD if you think $50/lb for beef is a hot deal? Seriously, I'm super interested to know. Which of the following describes you...
  1. I live for today with little concern for the future. I have very little that's entirely my own and not being mortgaged, leased, or financed in some other way. I have lot of disposable income that I freely dispose of on things like Wagyu beef.
  2. I have lots of income and savings. Most things I own I actually own, not just hold title to, and as such I have little debt. I have a plan for my retirement that is fully funded and that leaves me enough money to occasionally splurge on life's little luxuries.
  3. I am an Internet troll.
Just because people have money, doesn't mean they want to waste money. Doesn't matter what you're buying; If you're saving money then it's a deal to that person. Just because you don't want to pay for something or can't afford to doesn't make it not a deal for other people.

option 1 would be me. with jokes aside, im a foodie and resturants that i can afford to go, I would never be able to afford this kind of beef. I reside in houston,tx. and texas is one of those states that have cheap beef. with that being said, real kobe at a restuarant would be a place called B&B butchers which is the only place I know has the license to sell real wagyu beef. as price wise.... its $40-50 per ounce. so being cheap and all, i refer to cooking it on my own instead. $50/lbs is pretty steep for some folks who dont eat steak often, but last time i check (last month) my resource sent a quote for misakyi beef at 1300 for 6 lbs. so yeah once in a while i would dispose this amount for beef. but i would never spend over 100 dollars on shoes and would prefer to wear the 6 pack fruit loom t-shirts for the next 4 years.

Dang, relatively speaking 50% off is great, but yikes, $50 a pound is too much for me.

I'm still buying $4.50 a pound chuck beef on clearance/manager's special deal.
must be nice to still have chuck beef for $4.50 a pound. its like $8+ a pound everywhere for me.

Yes, it's $8 plus here too. But these are clearance specials, meaning it expires tomorrow or the day of. so it's usually already discoloring. not sure how nice that is 🤣

We use SRF pretty frequently but 1/2 - 3/4" for ribeye is pretty thin.

That said try via sous vide and then a finishing sear. It's hard to mess it up steak that way.

Cooking this would give me too much anxiety even at 50/lb.

who the heck pays all that money for starbucks coffee when Mcdonald's coffee is like 1/5 the cost?
coffee is coffee
meat is meat

If that logic worked, then we'd all be eating the same thing at the same place

I don't understand any of the arguments here.

Wagyu beef is Wagyu beef. It's expensive for a reason, and if it's not worth it to you, just pass on the deal. It is quite literally an experience and meal in one, I for one would pay $50 for 1lb(a meal for two easily, with sides) just to try it. $25/ea is not really out of the realm of a mid-priced dinner at a restaurant.

It's insanely easy to cook and just as good as everyone says. Nobody is replacing their chuck steaks with it, that's just stupid. As a once a year meal, it's well worth it. If you can't justify it or afford it even as that, just skip it. Is that difficult or something?

I am a pretty cheap person and definitely extraordinarily far from wealthy, but I would absolutely get a pound at this price for a special meal. This is literally two full price movie tickets in most big cities.

Yep, try it once. Instead of paying 4x the cost at a restaurant.
Not going to eat this every day.
If you like it, this can be a luxury eat once in a while. Just like someone would splurge on a fine restaurant once in awhile.

If it's not for you, it's not for you.
