Well in fairness this is just 10% off from an International seller, and at the moment (till 10/17) Lego.com in US has double-VIP points which comes out to 10% effective credit. So if you want to get the U.S. version direct from Lego it's essentially the same price assuming you sign up for VIP (free to sign up) and will use the credit later.
This has been out for a few years so not sure of rumors of when it might be "retiring."
The new (as of last year) Diagon Alley was the next "Large" Harry Potter set. I don't usually see that on sales but the double-VIP points applies to that too.

I don't disagree with your post, but personally speaking I would rather get $40 off up front to use elsewhere than $40 in points that I can redeem later on. With that said though, I've seen more shipping issues with Zavvi since they switched from DHL to Fedex, with more sets arriving damaged. But either way, deal is decent if you want it right now.
Amazon has some Lego sets, this one included, with 10% back if you use an Amazon Prime credit card right now. Star Wars Cantina also part of the 10% deal going on.
