It seems that this is 1366 x 768 HD, non-IPS. Drat, that's a deal-breaker for me.

It's an interesting decision to pair an inferior screen with superior budget processor.

Only 220 nits as well. Walmart got the description wrong as well it is not 2 in 1. They sell it refurb with a correct description:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Chr.../921728482
You can get it used on Amazon for as little as $148:
https://www.amazon.com/exec/obido...laptops-20
It only came out this year so it will not be that old.

The processor came out in 2017 but that is not unusual but it explains why it is in a cheap Chromebook. It is roughly equivalent to the Celeron N4020.

Definitely explains the price. No touchscreen kills it for me since Android functionality maps best to a Chromebook with a touchscreen. Of course, I didn't expect a touchscreen paired with the given CPU at this price... yet!

Good luck!

Doing more research these are the Pentium 5030 which is a big jump. The DDR is SoDimm so upgradable but it may be a nightmare to get to the DDR slots.
https://www.intel.com/content/www...tions.html

The reviews on this are quite good though as mentioned the screen could be much better.

The Intel site on one of these HP 14a's list the memory as:
Memory slots
1x SO-DIMM
Also 4GR LPDDR. So it may well be upgradable.

It is evidently super difficult to get to the SO-DIMM. I recommend against it. Here is a video of a different HP 14 with a replicable m.2 again 34 minutes of a professionals time to get to the m.2. It has only LPDDR.

These are not made to be serviceable. If you are not a professional you are likely to destroy your laptop trying to upgrade it.

I don't think that's true. The N5000 is quad core compared to the N4020's dual core and significantly better. that nanoreview page appears to have incorrect or outdated benchmarks.maybe they captured them early before a lot of tests were run. Passmark has a large enough sample size to be considered more accurate, and the N5000 is almost double the overall performance of the N4020:

I think that they just mean 5000 series. I saw some of these and checked and they have N5030's in them if newer. Significantly faster than the N5000. I think if you buy this you will get a N5030 which is much faster than the Celeron N4020

I ended up getting a Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 I3 with 8GB of RAM and 128 GB eMMC at E-Bay refurb. for $304. 13.3" Should get it in two days. https://www.ebay.com/itm/194225336776

As to the quad vs dual. Yes multitask is a bit faster. But again you will most likely get the 5030 which is quite a bit faster.

I really dislike how HP does some things. Having a SoDIMM slot almost impossible to get to.

I was really hoping some of the early BF adds gave me a core i3 in the sub 300 range even if it meant a smaller ssd. Any other recs anyone has for a new chromebook (just because its a gift) without a basic processor for $300 would be appreciated!

You can get them refurb for that price. Some of the Flex 5's were below $300 with 4GB of DDR. It is possible if you are lucky on BF you will get that price.

How did you determine it's non-ips?

Thanks
