Consider this if you don't need the new features such as faster processor, remote or higher HDR framerate.

Edit: 1st gen is Atmos capable.

Depends on the firmware version. Likely not jailbreak-able unless you get a unit with older firmware.

I will have to do some more research but its still a great deal. I use them at the houseboat for viewing movies, etc. Headed out to pickup now!

No. A new version was recently released with an updated remote, more CPU power, new WiFi & HDMI standards. Probably not worth an upgrade for most with a 4th gen Apple TV, but if the new remote is enticing it can be purchased separately for $60.

Doubtful, there's already a new version that was released fairly recently. I don't think anyone is expecting a new Apple TV today.

It depends on which Smart TV you have. I have an LG OLED TV and neither the operating system or the app store has been updated since purchase so I couldn't get things like HBO Max or anything that's come out relatively recently.

Depends if ur smart tv can provide u all the streaming apps u want

Yes! It is!

Yes, thats a software update not a hardware one.

We have two 2nd generation 4K and -now- three 1st generation 4K Apple TVs in the house.. The family still favors the old remote; I'm impartial. So, it doesn't "suck" for everyone.
With the Apple TV app on your smart TV or third party streaming device, you can access:
iTunes Store movies and TV shows (buy or rent);
Apple TV+ channel featuring Apple Originals, by subscription;
other premium Apple TV app Channels, each by subscription.

With the Apple TV box, you can additionally get
A choice of 12,000+ apps from the tvOS App Store, including streaming services that may not (yet) be available on some other platforms
Integration of some of these streaming services apps into the Apple TV app
iTunes Extras (bonus content for iTunes Store movies) for titles that have this feature
Home Sharing (local network) movies, tv shows, music, photos, home videos, podcasts, audiobooks
AirPlay streaming from devices to the Apple TV box
Apple Music on TV
Photos from iCloud
Apple Podcasts
Games, individual apps or Apple Arcade line of games subscription
Siri voice assistant for TV, where available
HomeKit hub smart devices integration
Beautifully paced aerial screen savers (a selection from near 100 randomized clips)
Personal photo screen saver option through iCloud Photos or Home Sharing
Apple Fitness+
Dolby Atmos
Just to clarify, if this is 4K than its first generation not fourth. The first 4K Apple TV came out in 2017. The second generation 4K Apple TV came out in April 2021.

The fourth generation Apple TV is HD, not 4K, which came out in 2015.

Thanks OP for the SD!.

Wanna jump on this but afraid Apple will pull one of their stunts were the 2017 model will not keep up with the 2021 model.

For those on the fence this link shows the differences between 2017 & 2021:

Great deal. Was looking for something basic for my sons TV that is friendly with his iPhone for streaming. I currently have one of these in the living room that works great.

Perfect timing! Was looking for one to replace the HD version that gets used occasionally (not connected to the main TV). Thanks, OP!

Yes it is. But I got it almost for similar price but with hoops through jump through 3 years back.

I believe so. A lot of places cleared them out at $99 when the 5th generation came out.

That's what I did. Still didn't open it though. Wonder if I'm past return period
