I think the issue is that the defense of these seems to be that it has its pros and cons compared to the XM4, but that ignores the fact that one costs double what the other does.

If the Airpods max were $300 MSRP they'd be an interesting competitive headphone option. But priced the way they are limits any interest in them to a very specific set of customers that enjoy the apple ecosystem for convenience or fashion reasons, and aren't concerned with price. It's a different market than someone looking for good value for quality headphones.

So this sale is a good price for Airpods max, but it's not a good price for a pair of headphones, if that makes sense.

I have both. I LOVE my XM4s but they are very different products.
The feature set on the Maxes on they own, sets them apart. The clarity in the mids, surround sound (spatial audio) are much better. The transparency mode… it's almost nonexistent in the XM4s vs the Maxes.
Every once and awhile I like to go on walks with headphones. I would prefer to wear the XM4s on walks, they are lighter. But I can not hear my surroundings.

They absolutely 1000% do not, and I like JBL. They make budget-tier headphones that sound better than Beats, but that's about it.

The positional audio in these is so good and the sound stage fairly large, that I often find myself lifting it off one ear to make sure the sound isn't coming from you he speakers of the device they're paired with.

You are right about one thing, the people that get the most out of these are people in the Apple ecosystem. But then again, the eco system is why we bought these in the first place.

Honestly I love these damn things!
I'm ordering a 2nd pair eventually

Be honest tho

The sleep dock thing off Etsy is the shit. Worth it

I've owned Bose QCs and the Sony XM4s

Sound quality-wise they're all within a few points of one another. Noise cancelling I found the AirPods marginally, but noticeably better and transparency mode in the AirPods are hands down the best.

Where they really excel are build quality and comfort. The Sonys and Bose feel like toys in comparison and cheap toys at that. The ear cups are so much nicer and more durable than the faux-leather. Ironically the AirPods ear cup replacement is so much easier (magnets) but seems likely to be less needed.

Audio switching between devices is much better than the Sony which is limited to two devices. My Bose didn't support switching.

The case is rubbish.

A little. If for example drop to $350, will you still buy? unlikely I bet
$300s anytime. The AirPods already almost $200 so.

Just wondering, doesn't the XM4's have ambient sound mode you can turn on while you are walking with the XM4's on? Would that help to allow you to hear your surroundings during your walks? I usually have this turned on when gaming so I can still hear what's going on around me.

They do. They are better than headphones without this feature. But it still sounds like you have plastic, foam and a speaker between you and the outside word. Even with this feature on.

With the maxes often it sounds like, you have nothing on. I know this sounds like an exaggeration, but it's very often that good.

tried one of these out at an apple store. they sound pretty good, but don't sound 500 dollars good. the build quality is insane, but neither is it 500 dollars good.

Its better than the XM4, but not 500 dollars good either.

Honestly if these were 300-400 MSRP, I'd scoop these up pretty fast
429 in green?

I found a brand new sealed set on Facebook marketplace (local) for $350. Still has 11 months of warranty. I really like them. Quality and noise cancellation are incredible. Sound is pretty good for Bluetooth.

I tried these out earlier this year and really liked them. The build quality was amazing and the sound was great. Unfortunately they're out of my price range but they're awesome if you can afford them.
I'd recommend them if you're in the Apple ecosystem.

Massively overpriced headphones for people who don't know there are better options out there for cheaper, and far better options in the price range.
There are no cheaper options that are better than these in terms of software integration, features, and good sound. If you're comparing wired, open back headphones to this, you're missing the point.

That being said, I'm really hoping these go down sub-$400 on black friday.

I have a pair. Seriously the best headphones I've ever used hands down. The noise canceling and build quality are next level.

Everyone knows they are overpriced and that there are better options. But at the same time some people think it's important what others think about them and that's who apple targets....
