Its cheaper if you just buy the hepa filter from home depot and cut it into shape
To be clear, I'm not thread crapping but I find this interesting. The C545 from Costco is what, $99 on sale? And comes with 2 years worth of filters? So basically they're saying the hardware is worth $30? Sheesh, this really is the razor/razor blade model.
To be fair, the hardware is primarily plastic, a fan, and a small circuit board to enable control of said fan. Its not really a complex device, just has to check air quality and turn a fan.
Not to say filter prices arent inflated to how much their material costs are either.

We have 2 of these filter units and after a year the main filter still looks clean although the carbon filter and prefilter have gotten rather dirty from dust so I've cleaned/replaced those. Do most of you change the main filter annual?

Yup. Printer/toner model, whatever you want to call it. I'm honestly considering trying a manual clean-and-reuse of my existing filters. Not even sure how to start, but throw enough compressed air and Bleach at anything and the worst that could happen is you have to buy new ones anyway.

Was going to say "weren't these $30 last time they were on sale".
Have had mine for about 2 months, and it works just okay. Still pretty dusty in my apartment. If anything I think my PC's are better at sucking in dust than this thing.

Yeah, and just like printers, people get rid of these all the time for dirt cheap on marketplace or craigslist, because they don't want to shell out for new filters Just buy second hand and replace the filters. I picked one up a couple weeks ago for $20 and just bought generic filters.

That is a good point. Ridiculous.
