the main difference is that these garmin watches are primarily used for sports and running. so the entire focus of the device is that. the "smart" aspect is basically just notifications from your phone on your watch and that is about it. This is exactly what i want, so the garmin watches work for me. also, the battery life is way better on the garmin watches. i only charge my watch about once every 10 days or so. and that is with using the gps for runs and bluetooth connectivity to my phone for notifications 24x7. not having to charge every night allows the sleep tracking to actually be useful as well. so it just depends on what you're looking for. if you want one to be an actual smart watch, get the apple watch. if you want it for running and sports with a few smart features, get the garmin.
I have the Vivoactive Music 3, not this newer version, but I use mine all the time with my Jabra Elite 65's and have never had a problem with hiccups or disconnects. Just a counterpoint.

What is battery life? My Vivoactive 3 is about three days with normal use. My older HR model used to get one week of battery life.
I also have the Vivoactive 3, non music version, and found that watch face choice can greatly affect battery life. Each change on the watch face drains battery, so watch faces with small or no seconds showing, or less frequently updated data tend to give me 5-6 days per charge.
This is low new for this best running watch currently on the market. I know it is released in 2017 and is one generation behind the current model. However, the current x4x series adopted Sony GPS chip and therefore according to most runners I know is simply not reliable.
For the most accurate reading on distance, pace, etc., you simply cannot find any Garmin FR better than 935.

I have a VA 3 Music and tempted to buy this deal. Anyone who's upgraded from a 3 to a 4 care to comment? I walk, run, body weight and weights.
$120 for the 45s is am amazing deal and it's a great watch if you want the smaller face! It's not the latest, but it has almost all of the same sensors and guts as the 55, which is not available in a smaller form. These watches have the best screens I've ever seen on a watch. I also love having buttons and not a touchscreen.

I like the 4 better than the 3 but its not perfect. Better more responsive screen is the most noticeable. 4 is a little bit bigger. There are more options in the UI, but its not as streamlined or intuitive as the 3.

My wife has been losing big weight but isn't satisfied with her Fitbit versa 2. These Garmins are EXPENSIVE. This sale plus gift card money equals a 935 for Christmas for her. Looks like this should solve all her Fitbit issues though the idea of paying $100 for a heart rate strap is bananas

I have the Vivoactive 4, had it about a year now. Pretty happy with it. Sleep tracking is garbage and with the newer updates my favorite watch face eats up the battery in like 3 days tops. Using a stock face lasts forever though (about a week with heavy training sessions, longer without).
Benefit is there's no need for the backlight to see what's going on. I actually turned mine off completely. Another downside is the music options. I don't have Spotify premium or the other 2 options so I'm out of luck. Wish they had support for tidal and Google (YouTube music now).
Good entry level tracking if you're getting serious about training. Fitbit feels like a toy in comparison but actually has better sleep tracking, this is better in every other way though.

Is Vivoactive 4 or Venu 2 better?
Venu 2 is slightly better in many ways. It also has an AMOLED screen.
Also Venu 1 is basically the Vivoactive 4 but with an AMOLED screen. At $400 Venu 2 is NOT a good value compared to Venu 1 / Vivoactive 4 at $200. If you need a decent fitness smartwatch this is a solid deal.

Edit: This was a reply to the comment asking for the best smartwatch. SD app messed up.
